Ganashatru (Enemy of the People/Public Enemy, 1990) Satyajit Ray's Ganashatru, a Bengali adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's seminal 1882 play An Enemy of the People, reimagines the European classic within the layered socio-cultural fabric of contemporary India. Released under its original title in the UK, the film was screened out of competition at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival and garnered the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali at the 37th National Film Awards. गणशत्रु (1990) सत्यजित राय की यह बांग्ला भाषा में निर्मित फ़िल्म नॉर्वेजियन लेखक हेनरिक इब्सन के सन् 1882 में प्रकाशित प्रसिद्ध नाटक 'एन एनिमी ऑफ़ द पीपल' का भारतीय संदर्भों में पुन:रूपांतरण करती है। निर्देशक राय ने यहाँ तत्कालीन यूरोपीय संदर्भों को ध्यान में रखकर लिखी गई नाटक की कथा को आधुनिक भारत की जटिल सामाजिक और सांस्कृतिक परिस्थितियों के भीतर पिरोकर नया अर्थ दिया। सत्यजित राय की गणशत्रु को सन् 1989 में हुए कान फ़िल्म फ़ेस्टिवल में 'आउट ऑफ़ कम्पटीशन' खण्ड में दिखाने के लिए चुना गया था और भारत में इसे सैंतीसवें राष्ट्रीय फ़िल्म पुरस्कारों में 'सर्वश्रेष्ठ बांग्ला फ़ीचर फ़िल्म' का राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार हासिल हुआ। इस कहानी के केंद्र में एक गहरा नैतिक द्वंद्व मौजूद है। यह द्वंद्व है दो विपरीत मूल्यों के मध्य जिनमें प्रमुख हैं सच्चाई और सत्ता के मध्य, विज्ञान और अंधविश्वास के मध्य, व्यक्तिगत विवेक और सामूहिक विश्वास के मध्य टकराव। राय ने यहाँ इब्सन की यूरोपियन कथा को एक ठेठ भारतीय शहर के परिवेश में ला खड़ा किया है।शहर की अर्थव्यवस्था और आस्था दोनों शहर के एक प्रतिष्ठित मंदिर पर टिकी हैं। यह मंदिर तीर्थयात्रियों और पर्यटकों के आकर्षण का केंद्र है और नगर की जीवनरेखा बना हुआ है। लेकिन जब फ़िल्म के शीर्षक किरदार डॉक्टर अशोक गुप्ता को यह मालूम पड़ता है...

Haridas, the editor of Janabarta and Nisith Gupta, the municipal chairman and Ashok Gupta's younger brother wait at the esteemed doctor's house, enjoying the hospitality of his endearing wife, Maya.
