Introduction
Devdas (2002), directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is a grand adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's iconic Bengali novel. This is the third Hindi remake of the 1917 classic, following the 1936 and 1955 versions. Produced by Bharat Shah under Mega Bollywood, the film features an impressive star cast, including Shah Rukh Khan as Devdas, Aishwarya Rai as Parvati "Paro," and Madhuri Dixit as Chandramukhi. Supporting roles are played by Jackie Shroff, Kirron Kher, Smita Jaykar and Vijayendra Ghatge. The film's story revolves around Devdas, a wealthy law graduate who returns from London to marry his childhood friend, Paro. However, his family's rejection of their union leads him into a downward spiral of alcoholism, eventually seeking solace in the arms of the courtesan, Chandramukhi. The film explores the complex emotional dynamics of love, loss and despair, centering on Devdas, Paro, and Chandramukhi—an emotional triangle that has captivated audiences for generations.
Bhansali was deeply inspired by the novel, having read it a second time before embarking on the project in 1999. He worked on the screenplay with Prakash Ranjit Kapadia, and production began in 2000, with extensive research into British Raj-era architecture, led by Nitin Chandrakant Desai. Filming took place across various locations, including Bikaner and Film City, and was completed in April 2002.
The film's soundtrack remains iconic, with the legendary Kathak guru Birju Maharaj choreographing the timeless “Kahe chhede mohe.” Alongside other choreographers, including Saroj Khan and Vaibhavi Merchant, the dance sequences are unforgettable. The music, composed by Ismail Darbar and lyrics by Nusrat Badr and Sameer Anjaan, created a lasting impact, with vocal performances from legends like Shreya Ghoshal, whose career was launched through this film. Devdas premiered at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival on May 23, 2002.
Despite controversies revolving around Bhansali taking cinematic liberty in depicting the classic characters, Devdas remains a cinematic masterpiece, blending traditional Indian elements with Bhansali's grand visionary direction.
