Introduction

Dastan (1950) was a quintessential drama film produced and directed by A. R. Kardar. It emerged as a major box office success and was the third highest-grossing film of the year. Featuring an impressive ensemble cast—including Raj Kapoor, Suraiya, Veena, Suresh, Al Nasir, Murad, and Shakila—the film captivated audiences with its compelling narrative and strong performances.
The story unfolds as a tragic melodrama told through a flashback, drawing inspiration from Irving Reis's 1948 Hollywood film Enchantment. The plot centres around Indira (Suraiya), an orphan raised by the stern and principled Rani (Veena). As Indira matures into a beautiful young woman, she finds herself at the centre of romantic attention from three suitors: Raj (Raj Kapoor), Kundan (Al Nasir), and Ramesh (Suresh).
Rani, who is both Raj and Kundan's sister, disapproves of Indira marrying into her own family. She instead arranges a meeting with Ramesh's mother (Pratima Devi) to propose a marriage alliance. Indira, however, resents the arrangement and refuses to marry Ramesh. When Raj confesses his love for Indira to Rani, she not only warns him that Indira is expected to marry Ramesh but also reveals that Indira is romantically involved with his brother, Kundan. The story then follows the emotional turmoil and romantic entanglements that determine Indira's ultimate choice. The film's visual storytelling was elevated by Dwarka Divecha's evocative cinematography, while its soundtrack—composed by the legendary Naushad with lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni—added to its lasting appeal. The songs, sung by Suraiya and Mohammed Rafi, became hits, with memorable numbers like Yeh Sawan Ki Rut Tum Aur Hum, Yeh Mausam Aur Yeh Tanhai, Ae Sham Tu Bata, and Naam Tera Hai Zuban Par.
Critically acclaimed as “one of the biggest commercial hits” of the year, Dastan garnered widespread attention, particularly for Suraiya's performance, which was said to have “overshadowed” Raj Kapoor's. But despite the film's success, it marked the end of Suraiya's reign as a leading actress, as her popularity declined soon after, paving the way for Madhubala to rise as Bollywood's new top female star.

दास्तान (1950) अपने दौर की एक यादगार फ़िल्म थी जिसका निर्देशन मशहूर फ़िल्म निर्माता-निर्देशक ए. आर. करदार ने किया था। इस फ़िल्म को दर्शकों का भरपूर प्यार मिला। यह फ़िल्म उस वर्ष की तीसरी सबसे अधिक कमाई करने वाली फ़िल्म बनी और टिकट खिड़की पर बड़ी कामयाबी हासिल की। इस फ़िल्म में पर्दे पर राज कपूर, सुरैया, वीणा, सुरेश, अल नासिर, मुराद और शकीला जैसे उस दौर के जाने-माने कलाकारों का समूह काम कर रहा था, जिनके दमदार अभिनय और कहानी की भावात्मकता ने दर्शकों को बाँध लिया।
फ़िल्म की कहानी मेलोड्रामा से रची एक दुखभरी दास्तान है जिसमें फ़्लैशबैक तकनीक का इस्तेमाल किया गया है। इस फ़िल्म की कहानी हॉलीवुड में बनी इर्विंग रीस की 1948 की 'एनचांटमेंट' के कथानक से प्रभावित थी। फ़िल्म की कहानी इंदिरा (सुरैय्या) नाम की एक अनाथ लड़की के साथ आगे बढ़ती है। इंदिरा को एक सख़्त और कायदों की पक्की स्त्री रानी (वीणा) ने पाल-पोसकर बड़ा किया है। जवान होने पर इंदिरा का रूप निखरकर सामने आता है। कहानी तब नया मोड़ लेती है जब राज (राज कपूर), कुंदन (अल नासिर) और रमेश (सुरेश) नामक तीन भिन्न पुरुष इंदिरा के आकर्षण में बँधकर उससे प्रेम करने लगते हैं।
इनमें राज और कुंदन रानी के भाई हैं। रानी नहीं चाहती कि इंदिरा की शादी खुद उसके अपने परिवार में हो। ऐसे में वह इंदिरा का विवाह रमेश से करवाने की योजना बनाती है। इसे संभव बनाने के लिए वो यह प्रस्ताव लेकर रमेश की माँ (प्रतिमा देवी) से मिलती है। इंदिरा शादी के लिए इस ज़ोर-ज़बरदस्ती से तय किए जा रहे रिश्ते से नाखुश होती है और रमेश से शादी करने से इंकार कर देती है। इधर जब राज अपनी बहन रानी से कहता है कि वह इंदिरा से प्रेम करता है, तो रानी उसे भरमाती है कि इंदिरा का विवाह तो रमेश से होना तय है। रानी यह कहकर भी उसके कान भरती है कि इंदिरा का चक्कर तो उसके भाई कुंदन से चल रहा है। आगे यह कहानी इंदिरा की प्रेम से जुड़ी उलझनों और उसकी भावनात्मक उधेड़बुन के इर्द-गिर्द घूमती है। आखिर में हम देखते हैं कि उसका निर्णय कैसे बदलता है।
इस फ़िल्म के दृश्य विधान को द्वारका दिवेचा ने अपनी प्रभावशाली सिनेमैटोग्राफ़ी से और भी चमत्कारिक बना दिया है। वहीं संगीतकार नौशाद और गीतकार शकील बदायुनी की जोड़ी ने इस फ़िल्म के लिए कालजयी संगीत तैयार किया। सुरैय्या और मोहम्मद रफ़ी के गाए गीत जैसे ये सावन की रुत, तुम और हम, ये मौसम और ये तन्हाई, ऐ शाम तू बता और नाम तेरा है ज़ुबान पर दर्शकों के बीच बेहद लोकप्रिय हुए।
आलोचकों ने दास्तान को उस वर्ष की सबसे बड़ी व्यावसायिक सफलताओं में से एक करार दिया। फ़िल्म में ख़ासकर सुरैय्या के अभिनय की जमकर सराहना हुई, जिसके किरदार के इर्द-गिर्द कहानी घूमती है। उनके अभिनय और गायन को इतना उम्दा बताया गया कि उसने राज कपूर के किरदार पर से भी नज़रें हटा दीं। पर दास्तान की इस उल्लेखनीय सफलता के बावजूद यह सुरैय्या के शीर्ष अभिनेत्री के रूप में शिखर पर होने का अन्तिम ऐलान भी था। इसके बाद के सालों में उनकी लोकप्रियता में तेज़ी से गिरावट आई और आगे आनेवाले पचास के दशक में एक नई अभिनेत्री मधुबाला ने हिन्दी सिनेमा की शीर्ष नायिका के सिंहासन पर अपना कब्ज़ा जमाया।
