राम राज्य (1943) भारतीय सिनेमा के इतिहास की एक यादगार क्लासिक मानी जाने वाली पौराणिक फ़िल्म है। यह फ़िल्म सिर्फ़ फ़िल्म भर नहीं, भक्ति और धर्म के मार्ग पर सिनेमा का एक पुष्प अर्पण सरीख़ा था। इस फ़िल्म के निर्देशक विजय भट्ट जैसे दूरदर्शी फ़िल्मकार थे। फ़िल्म में अभिनेता प्रेम अदीब ने मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम श्रीराम की और अभिनेत्री शोभना समर्थ ने सीताजी की पावन भूमिका निभाई। राम राज्य सन् 1943 की तीसरी सबसे अधिक कमाई करने वाली भारतीय फ़िल्म बनी। इसने आज़ादी की लड़ाई के अन्तिम चरण में गहरे जकड़े समूचे राष्ट्र को अपने प्रभाव में ले लिया।
इस फ़िल्म का प्रभाव इतना व्यापक था कि सिनेमा को एक कमतर और समाज के लिए हानिकारक विधा मानने वाले महात्मा गांधी भी इस फ़िल्म को देखने पहुँचे। अपने जीवन में सिर्फ़ यही एक फ़िल्म गांधीजी ने देखी थी। इसकी वजह समझना मुश्किल नहीं। फ़िल्म का शीर्षक स्वयं गांधीजी की कल्पना के नैतिक, न्यायप्रिय और सत्य पर आधारित आदर्श समाज - 'राम राज्य' का प्रतीक था। कहना होगा कि केवल इस एक संयोग के चलते आध्यात्मिक नैतिकता की ज़मीन पर खड़ी यह फ़िल्म सिनेमा के पर्दे से निकलकर इतिहास का हिस्सा बन गई।
फ़िल्म की कहानी राजा राम के चौदह वर्ष के वनवास, उसके बाद सीताजी की रक्षा के लिए रावण से युद्ध और अन्त में धर्म की विजय की कहानी है। फ़िल्म के सबसे मार्मिक दृश्यों में से एक में सीता की अग्निपरीक्षा दिखाई गई है। सीताजी अग्नि पर चलती हैं और किसी पवित्र आत्मा सी प्रगट होती हैं। अग्निदेव स्वयं प्रकट होकर उनकी पवित्रता की गवाही देते हैं। फिर भी यहाँ देवत्व को जनमत के संदेह के सामने झुकता दिखाया गया है। अयोध्या लौटने पर राम एक राजा की भूमिका में अपने आदर्श और कर्तव्य को सर्वोपरि रखते हुए एक धोबी के संदेह भरी बात कहने पर पत्नी सीता का त्याग कर देते हैं।
