Anhonee1973
Introduction
Anhonee (1973) Directed by Ravi Tandon, it is a suspense drama featuring an accomplished ensemble cast led by Sanjeev Kumar, Leena Chandavarkar, Bindu, Padma Khanna, and Kamini Kaushal. The film's score was composed by the celebrated duo Laxmikant–Pyarelal, with lyrics penned by Verma Malik.
The narrative centres on Dr. Rekha (Leena Chandavarkar), who, following the untimely death of her father, continues to reside in Bombay with her stepmother, Mrs. Rai Bahadur (Kamini Kaushal), the proprietor of a mental institution. The mysterious death of Rai Bahadur Singh, Rekha's father, forms the central mystery around which the story unfolds. It is eventually revealed that Rekha had accidentally caused his death while attempting to defend herself from an assault in the dark, when her intoxicated father mistook her for his wife.
During a late-night train journey, Rekha encounters Sunil (Sanjeev Kumar), an escaped mental patient armed with a knife. Remarkably, her calm intervention succeeds in pacifying him. She subsequently arranges for his admission to the mental institution, where he comes under the care of Dr. Mathur (Manmohan) and Rekha herself. Under their supervision, Sunil begins to show significant signs of recovery.
As the narrative progresses, Sunil rescues Rekha from an attempted assault in a parking lot, an incident that gradually develops into a romantic attachment between the two. Rekha, however, remains hesitant about committing to marriage, burdened by a traumatic secret she is reluctant to disclose. Eventually, after persistent encouragement from Sunil, she confesses the circumstances surrounding her father's death. Yet she remains troubled by one unresolved question: why her father did not stop after recognising her voice. She attributes his actions to his state of intoxication.
The film later reveals a crucial twist—Sunil is not the disturbed patient he appears to be, but rather an undercover police inspector investigating the mysterious death of Rai Bahadur Singh. Their relationship reaches a dramatic turning point during an elaborate engagement celebration, where Rekha finally discovers Sunil's true identity and attempts to flee from the situation.
Commercially, Anhonee emerged as a successful box-office performer. Although it was released in a year dominated by landmark hits such as Bobby, Jugnu, and Zanjeer, the film carved a distinct place for itself within the suspense-drama genre. Its soundtrack proved particularly successful, with music by Laxmikant–Pyarelal and lyrics by Verma Malik receiving widespread acclaim. Songs such as Buddhu Pad Gaya Palle (Lata Mangeshkar) and Main To Ek Pagal (Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle) gained considerable popularity, while Balma Hamar Motorcar Leke Aayore and Hungama Ho Gaya, both sung by Asha Bhosle, became runaway hits. Hungama Ho Gaya in particular has retained enduring popularity and was later remixed by Amit Trivedi for Kangana Ranaut's film Queen.
