Introduction

Zoya Akhtar (born 14 October 1972) is a prominent Indian filmmaker, producer, and screenwriter whose work has significantly shaped contemporary Hindi cinema and streaming narratives. The daughter of celebrated writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar and screenwriter Honey Irani, she studied filmmaking at New York University before apprenticing with directors Mira Nair, Tony Gerber, and Dev Benegal. In 2015, she and long-time collaborator Reema Kagti co-founded Tiger Baby Films, a production company now central to the evolving landscape of Indian storytelling.

Akhtar hails from a distinguished lineage: her great-grandfather, Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi, was an eminent Islamic scholar who edited the first diwan of Mirza Ghalib and later emerged as a significant figure in the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

Her early career was eclectic, beginning as co-director of the music video Price of Bullets for the rock band Pentagram. She later worked as a casting director on Split Wide Open (1999) and Dil Chahta Hai (2001), and assisted on films including Dil Chahta Hai and Lakshya (2004). Akhtar subsequently served as executive producer on Reema Kagti's Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. (2007).

Akhtar made her directorial debut with Luck by Chance (2009), a nuanced exploration of the film industry starring Farhan Akhtar and Konkona Sen Sharma. Though modest in its commercial performance, it earned widespread critical admiration and won her the inaugural Filmfare Award for Best Debut Director. Her breakthrough arrived with Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), a coming-of-age road drama that became a major commercial and critical success, securing her the Filmfare Award for Best Director.

She co-wrote the acclaimed psychological thriller Talaash (2012) and contributed to the anthology Bombay Talkies (2013). In 2015, Akhtar directed the ensemble drama Dil Dhadakne Do (2015) another commercial hit, and continued to explore innovative formats through her segments in Lust Stories (2018) and Ghost Stories (2020).

Her 2019 musical drama Gully Boy marked a career landmark, winning a record 13 Filmfare Awards, including Best Director and Best Screenplay, cementing her status as the only woman to have won Best Director twice. Akhtar has also co-created the acclaimed series Made in Heaven (2019–2023) and Dahaad (2023) and directed The Archies (2023). Widely regarded as one of Hindi cinema's most awarded contemporary filmmakers, she continues to be celebrated for her incisive storytelling and distinctive narrative voice.
