Yahudi (1958) was an epic romantic historical drama directed by Bimal Roy, starring Dilip Kumar, Meena Kumari, Sohrab Modi, Nazir Hussain and Nigar Sultana, among others. The film is based on the play Yahudi Ki Ladki by Agha Hashar Kashmiri, a classic of Parsi-Urdu theatre, which explores the persecution of Jews in the Roman Empire, centered in Rome. Although the film received mixed critical reviews, it was a major box-office success, becoming the third-highest-grossing Indian film of 1958, largely due to the star power of Dilip Kumar and Meena Kumari. Despite its commercial success, Yahudi faced criticism for its anachronistic blend of Roman, European, and colorful pan-Indian costumes, even in black and white.
