Introduction

Yaarana (1981) is a musical drama directed by Rakesh Kumar, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Amjad Khan, Neetu Singh, Tanuja, and Kader Khan. The film follows the somewhat familiar tale of Bishan (Amjad Khan), who loses his fortune while helping his friend Kishan (Bachchan) pursue a singing career. Later, when Kishan becomes a successful singer, it is his turn to help and support Bishan. The plot is loosely based on the friendship between Karna and Duryodhana from the Mahabharata.

The film's soundtrack was composed by Rajesh Roshan, with lyrics penned by Anjaan. The iconic song "Sara Zamana" was later recreated as "Haseeno Ka Deewana" in the 2017 film Kaabil, marking the first time Roshan reworked one of his own compositions. This was the beginning of his journey in revisiting his earlier works. The film also featured "Chhookar Mere Man Ko," a song inspired by the Bengali Rabindra Sangeet "Tomar holo shuru..." and sung by Kishore Kumar, which became a massive hit.

Despite its captivating music and strong performances, Yaarana struggled at the box office, though it had moderate success in some territories. The film was recognized at the 29th Filmfare Awards, where Amjad Khan won Best Supporting Actor for his performance.

When the film marked its 40th anniversary in 2021, Amitabh Bachchan reflected on the making of the song "Saara Zamana" in a blog post. The song was filmed at the newly constructed Netaji Subhas Stadium in Kolkata, where the shoot was accompanied by an overwhelming crowd that became uncontrollable, adding to the chaotic but unforgettable atmosphere of the experience.
