Introduction

Vidyapati (1937), directed by Debaki Bose for New Theatres, is a landmark Bengali biopic about the Maithili poet and Vaishnava saint, Vidyapati. Released in both Bengali (Bidyapati) and Hindi (Vidyapati), the film starred Pahari Sanyal in the titular role, with a notable ensemble cast including Kanan Devi, Prithviraj Kapoor, Chhaya Devi, Leela Desai, K. C. Dey, and Kidar Sharma.

The narrative centers on King Shiva Singha (Prithviraj Kapoor) and Queen Lakshmi (Chhaya Devi), who invite Vidyapati (Pahari Sanyal) and his companion Anuradha (Kanan Devi) to their court. The Queen becomes enamoured with the poet's verses and falls in love with him, leading to the King's emotional turmoil. As the King turns to Anuradha for solace, the Queen, consumed by guilt and despair, takes her own life. The tragic climax underscores the emotional depth of the story.

Kazi Nazrul Islam and Debaki Bose co-wrote the script and dialogues, weaving Vidyapati's sensuous poetry into the screenplay. The lyrics, seen as bold for the time, contributed to the film's widespread popularity. R. C. Boral's music, incorporating Western elements like the organ and piano, featured memorable songs performed by Kanan Devi, Pahari Sanyal, and K. C. Dey—making them instant classics.

Though titled Vidyapati, the film is remembered for Kanan Devi's outstanding performance as Anuradha, which became central to the film's success. Prithviraj Kapoor's portrayal was also praised, particularly by Filmindia's editor Baburao Patel.

The film was later referenced in Guru Dutt's Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) as a tribute to the Studio Era. With its artistic direction, powerful music, and strong performances, Vidyapati remains one of Debaki Bose's finest cinematic achievements and a major box office success of 1937.
