Introduction

Shaheed (1948) a poignant Hindi romantic drama released in 1948, was written and directed by Ramesh Saigal. Set against the turbulent backdrop of India's freedom struggle, the film masterfully intertwines personal conflict with nationalistic fervour. Featuring a stellar cast led by Dilip Kumar, Kamini Kaushal, Chandra Mohan, and Leela Chitnis, the film became the highest-grossing Indian movie of that year and remains a cherished classic in Indian cinema.
At the heart of the story is Ram (Dilip Kumar), a passionate young freedom fighter inspired by Gandhian ideals of non-violence and sacrifice. His journey is fraught with emotional and ideological challenges, particularly when he finds himself at odds with his own father, Raibahadur Dwarakadas (Chandra Mohan), a man deeply rooted in colonial loyalty. शहीद (1948) आज़ादी के फ़ौरन बाद के वर्ष में रिलीज़ हुई एक असरदार रोमांटिक ड्रामा फ़िल्म है। इसके लेखक एवं निर्देशक रमेश सहगल थे। इस फ़िल्म की कहानी भारत के स्वतंत्रता संग्राम की उथल-पुथल से भरी पृष्ठभूमि को सामने रखकर रची गई थी। इसके चलते फ़िल्म की कहानी किरदारों की निजी कशमकश को उस दौर में हिलोरें लेती देशभक्ति की भावना के साथ कुशलतापूर्वक पिरो देती है। दिलीप कुमार, कामिनी कौशल, चंद्रमोहन और लीला चिटनीस जैसे बेहतरीन कलाकारों की निभाई भूमिकाओं से सजी यह फ़िल्म उस वर्ष की सबसे अधिक कमाई करने वाली भारतीय फ़िल्म थी। आज भी इसे भारतीय सिनेमा इतिहास की एक यादगार कृति के बतौर याद किया जाता है।
फ़िल्म की कहानी के केंद्र राम (दिलीप कुमार) का किरदार है। राम महात्मा गांधी के सत्य, अहिंसा और त्याग के सिद्धांतों से प्रेरित एक युवा स्वतंत्रता सेनानी है। पर अपने सिद्धान्तों के चलते राम के जीवन में भावनात्मक और वैचारिक टकराव आता है। ख़ासकर तब, जब राम को इन आदर्शों के चलते ब्रिटिश हुकूमत के प्रति निष्ठावान अपने पिता रायबहादुर द्वारकादास (चंद्रमोहन) से टकराना पड़ता है। हालात को और जटिल बनानेवाली उपस्थिति है पुलिस अधिकारी विनोद (राम सिंह) की। राम के बचपन का मित्र विनोद न केवल राम के क्रांतिकारी विचारों का विरोधी है बल्कि उनकी बचपन की साथी शीला (कामिनी कौशल) से प्रेम के सिलसिले में राम का प्रतिद्वंद्वी भी बना बैठा है।
शहीद फ़िल्म इस नज़रिए से भी ख़ास महत्व रखती है कि यह सम्मानित अभिनेता चंद्रमोहन के करियर की अंतिम फिल्म थी। इससे पहले वे सोहराब मोदी की पुकार (1939) और महबूब खान की रोटी (1942) और हुमायूँ (1945) जैसी उल्लेखनीय फ़िल्मों में अपने यादगार अभिनय से पहचाने गए थे।
फ़िल्म का भावनात्मक रूप से प्रभावशाली संगीत तैयार किया था गुलाम हैदर ने और यादगार गीतों के बोल लिखे थे राजा मेहदी अली खान तथा क़मर जलालाबादी ने। फ़िल्म के “वतन की राह में वतन के नौजवान शहीद हो” और “बदनाम न हो जाए मोहब्बत का फ़साना” जैसे कालजयी गीत आज भी लोगों के दिलों में बसे हुए हैं।
शहीद फ़िल्म आलोचकीय और व्यावसायिक दोनों तरह से बहुत कामयाब रही। इस फ़िल्म ने न सिर्फ़ देशभक्ति की भावना से रची व्यक्तिगत बलिदान की यादगार कहानी से दर्शकों का दिल जीता, इसके साथ अभिनेता दिलीप कुमार भी भारतीय सिनेमा के सबसे लोकप्रिय नायकों की स्थायी सूची में शामिल हो गए।
