Introduction
Sazaa (1972) produced by G P Sippy and directed by directed by cinematographer Fali Mistry, the film featured Dev Anand, Nimmi and Shyama in lead roles, it was an emotional drama that despite being melodramatic, remains engrossing because of the twists that follow. Interestingly, Fali's brother, Jal Mistry was the cinematographer. Also, the 5 film old by then Nimmi got top billing in the film to Dev Anand though he had by then acted in more than 15 films.
The film begins with a woman, Kamini (Shyama) shrieking from atop a bungalow. Ashok (Dev Anand) hurriedly descends an angular staircase, and then runs into a street where he meets with an accident. Kamini rushes him to a hospital. He then takes a long time to recuperate. Kamini visits Ashok daily without fail and after he recovers, Kamini offers him a manager's job at her father Muthumal's (Gope) company and arranges for him to meet Mothumal over dinner. At Kamini's house, Ashok meets and falls in love with the maidservant Asha (Nimmi) who also happens to be his childhood mate. In due course, Asha reciprocates his feelings.
In reality, Ashok is the only son of a wealthy widower, Major Durjan (K. N. Singh), who gets him locked in a room with the instruction “to cremate him if he died of suffocation” after a chance discovery of another character, Rani Ma (Durga Khote), a look-alike of his deceased wife. Rani Ma is angry at Ashok, as her only daughter was abandoned by him on the night of their marriage, leading to her having gone mad. Durjan defies Rani Ma and decides to get Ashok married to Asha and the couple unite.
The music composed by S. D. Burman, was its greatest while Sahir Ludhianvi wrote the lyrics for the songs. On the album, film critic Suresh Kohli of The Hindu noted that all the songs "have thoughtful lyrics that provide a sense of permanency through S.D. Burman's immortal compositions."

सज़ा (1951) के निर्माता जी. पी. सिप्पी थे और इसके निर्देशक मशहूर सिनेमैटोग्राफ़र फ़ाली मिस्त्री थे। इस फ़िल्म में देव आनंद, निम्मी और श्यामा ने मुख्य भूमिकाएं निभाई थीं। फ़िल्म की कहानी जज़्बातों से भरी थी और मेलोड्रेमैटिक होने के बावजूद कहानी के दिलचस्प मोड़ इसे मनोरंजक बनाए रखते हैं। दिलचस्प बात यह भी है कि फ़ाली मिस्त्री के भाई जाल मिस्त्री इस फ़िल्म के सिनेमैटोग्राफ़र थे। इस फ़िल्म तक सिर्फ़ 5 फ़िल्मों में अभिनय कर चुकी अभिनेत्री निम्मी को इस फ़िल्म में 15 फ़िल्म पुराने स्थापित नायक देव आनंद के साथ बराबरी वाली जोड़ी मिली।
फ़िल्म की कहानी एक महिला कामिनी (श्यामा) के बंगले के ऊपर से चीखने से शुरू होती है। हमारा नायक अशोक (देव आनंद) जल्दी-जल्दी घुमावदार सीढ़ियाँ उतरता दिखता है। वो एक गली में भागता है जहाँ वो दुर्घटना की चपेट में आ जाता है। कामिनी उसे अस्पताल ले जाती है। धीरे-धीरे उसकी सेहत में सुधार आता है। कामिनी हर रोज़ अशोक से मिलने आती है और जब वो ठीक हो जाता है तो उसे अपने पिता मुथुमल (गोप) की कंपनी में मैनेजर की नौकरी का प्रस्ताव देती है। कामिनी अशोक को पिताजी से मुलाकात के लिए रात के खाने पर बुलाती है। पर कामिनी के घर पर अशोक की मुलाकात घर की सेविका आशा (निम्मी) से होती है। आशा उसकी बचपन की दोस्त निकलती है जिससे अशोक प्रेम करता है। आशा भी उसके प्यार को स्वीकार कर लेती है।
वास्तव में अशोक एक अमीर मेजर दुर्जन (के.एन. सिंह) का इकलौता बेटा है। पर पिता ने अपनी मृत पत्नी की हमशक्ल दूसरी किरदार रानी माँ (दुर्गा खोटे) से भेंट होने पर अपने ही बेटे को एक कमरे में बंद करवा दिया था। कमरे के बाहर ये तक लिखवा दिया था कि 'अगर वो दम घुटने से मर जाए तो उसका अंतिम संस्कार कर दिया जाए'। रानी माँ अशोक से पहले ही खार खाये बैठी हैं, क्योंकि अशोक ने उनकी इकलौती बेटी शादी की ऐन रात ठुकरा दिया था, जिसके चलते वो पागल हो गई थी। पर मेजर दुर्जन यहाँ रानी माँ की नहीं सुनता और अशोक की शादी आशा से करवाने का फैसला करता है। आखिर में दोनों प्रेमी एक हो जाते हैं। इस उतारचढ़ावों से भरी ड्रामा फ़िल्म को पारिवारिक किस्म के दर्शकों का खूब प्यार मिला और आलोचकों की सराहना भी मिली। कलाकारों के अभिनय की प्रशंसा हुई, ख़ास तौर पर अभिनेत्री निम्मी के काम की।
फ़िल्म में संगीत एस. डी. बर्मन का था और साहिर लुधियानवी ने गीतों के बोल लिखे थे। फ़िल्म के संगीत पर अखबार 'दि हिंदू' के फ़िल्म समीक्षक सुरेश कोहली ने टिप्पणी की थी कि “गीतों के बोल में समझ दिखती है और एस. डी. बर्मन का यादगार संगीत ठहराव का एहसास करवाता है।” लता मंगेशकर के गाए "धक धक जिया करे", "तुम ना जाने किस जहाँ", "हम प्यार की बाजी हारे" और "हो गई रे तेरी हो गई" जैसे गीत खूब पसन्द किये गए। लता मंगेशकर और तलत महमूद का गाया "आजा आजा तेरा इंतज़ार है, तुझे ढूंढ रहा मेरा प्यार है" भी चाहनेवालों की पसन्द रहा।
