While responding to his inner being and the world around, Satish Gujral created new imagery, pictorial and sculptural, shifting from one material to another, unconventional or traditional, and that in rhythm with changing techniques in handling them. It is difficult to pinpoint which inspired what- the image ushered in the material, or vice versa. the affinity is amazing. The forms he created in three-dimensional and on flat surface are often deeply rooted in indigenous plastic traditions. Sometimes they are also strongly redolent of the memories and deeply felt perceptions of the artsand cultures of far countries. Deep waters from faraway lands and times meet in his work...In the relief sculptures (Burnt Wood), roughly between the late seventies and 1990’s, the dark memories of the past are transformed into ponderous presence of vengeful tribal deities. The blind Unreason that he encountered in the daily business of living was concretised in his sculptures.
