Saaransh (1984): featured artwork

Introduction

Saaransh released in 1984, stands as one of the most introspective and enduring works of Hindi cinema. Directed by Mahesh Bhatt and produced by Rajshri Productions, the film features Anupam Kher, Rohini Hattangadi, Madan Jain, Nilu Phule, Suhas Bhalekar, and Soni Razdan, and marked the remarkable screen debut of Anupam Kher. With music composed by Ajit Verman and lyrics by Vasant Dev, Saaransh was selected as India’s official entry for the 57th Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category, though it ultimately did not secure a nomination.
At its core, Saaransh is a poignant meditation on grief, mortality, and moral responsibility. The narrative follows B. V. Pradhan (Kher), a retired Maharashtrian schoolteacher living in Mumbai with his wife, Parvati (Hattangadi), as they grapple with the devastating loss of their only son, who dies tragically in New York. Bereft of emotional and financial security, the couple rent out a room in their modest home, inadvertently drawing themselves into the troubled life of their tenant, Sujata (Razdan), a struggling actress.
Sujata is pregnant by Vilas, the son of a powerful and corrupt politician, Gajanan Chitre (Nilu Phule), who refuses to acknowledge the child for fear of electoral scandal. Parvati, overwhelmed by grief, becomes convinced that Sujata’s unborn child represents the spiritual rebirth of her deceased son. This belief propels the Pradhans into a courageous moral battle against political corruption, restoring purpose and dignity to their fractured lives.
Bhatt’s restrained direction and confessional style lend the film its profound realism, while Ajit Verman’s understated musical compositions—particularly “Andhiyara Gehraya” and “Har Ghadi Dhal Rahi Sham”—underscore its contemplative tone. Inspired by personal tragedy in Bhatt’s spiritual circle and real-life events, Saaransh emerged as a critical triumph, winning the National Film Award (1984) for Best Feature Film in Hindi and multiple Filmfare Awards (1984), including Best Actor for Kher and Best Story for Bhatt. Decades later, it remains a defining work of India’s middle-of-the-road cinema, revered for its emotional honesty and humanistic depth.
