Introduction

Phool (1945) The film marked the directorial debut of K. Asif, who would later gain legendary status for helming the iconic Mughal-e-Azam. Released in 1945, the film was a commercial success and became the fourth highest-grossing Indian film of that year.

This big-budget drama, written by Kamal Amrohi, is set within a traditional Muslim joint family. The narrative centres on Safdar, a noble man who is deprived of his rightful inheritance due to the manipulations of his sister-in-law. Despite his personal losses, Safdar remains committed to fulfilling a promise he made to his late father to complete the construction of a mosque.

The film featured a stellar ensemble cast including Prithviraj Kapoor, Suraiya, Veena, Mazhar Khan, Sitara Devi, Durga Khote, Yakub, Dixit, Agha, Wasti, Zilloobai, Majid, and Ashraf Khan. Suraiya played the lead female role, delivering a memorable performance that helped cement her status as a leading actress of the time.

The music, composed by the legendary Ghulam Haider, played a significant role in the film's success. The soundtrack featured several popular songs such as Ae Bahaduro Ae Mujahido by Chorus; Gori Kar Le Humse Pyar by Chorus; Kya Kahne Diwali Rani sung by Suraiya; Yeh Dil Gaya Kahin Dil Lenewala sung by Suraiya.

Phool remains an important film in the history of Indian cinema, not only for its storytelling and music but also for launching the career of one of India's most celebrated directors.
