Nirupa Roy (January 4, 1931- October 13, 2004) Born Kokila Kishorechandra Bulsara on in the village of Kalwada, Gujarat, she stands as one of the most iconic figures in the history of Indian cinema. Renowned for her portrayal of the self-sacrificing mother, she earned the moniker "Queen of Misery" for her unmatched ability to convey profound sorrow and heartbreak on screen. Roy's career spanned over five decades, during which she acted in more than 250 films, earning widespread acclaim for her deeply resonant roles in both historical epics and contemporary social dramas.

Her film career began in 1946, when she made her debut in the Gujarati film Ranakdevi and simultaneously entered the Hindi film industry with Amar Raj. However, it was her portrayal of divine figures in mythological films that first captured the public's imagination. Notably, in the 1950 blockbuster Har Har Mahadev, she played Goddess Parvati opposite Trilok Kapoor's Shiva, a performance that cemented her as a symbol of maternal grace and devotion. The strength of this portrayal was such that people flocked to her home, seeking her blessings, believing her to be an earthly incarnation of the goddess.

Roy's career reached greater heights in the 1970s and 80s when she became synonymous with the quintessential mother figure in Indian cinema. Her roles in films such as Do Bigha Zamin (1953), Deewaar (1975), Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978), and Mard (1985) showcased her profound emotional range, elevating her to iconic status. Particularly memorable was her role in Deewaar, where her poignant line "Mere paas maa hai" became a cultural landmark, still evoked in popular discourse to this day.

Roy's enduring legacy was recognized with numerous accolades, including three Filmfare Awards and the prestigious Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004.
