Introduction
Neelima Azeem (born 2 December 1958 ) is an accomplished Indian actress, classical Kathak dancer, and writer, widely respected for her contributions to Indian cinema, television, and the performing arts. Azeem first gained prominence through her refined performances on Indian television, where she enjoyed a successful run in several popular serials before transitioning seamlessly into feature films.
Born into an intellectually and culturally distinguished family, Neelima Azeem is the daughter of Anwar Azeem, a noted journalist and Urdu author from Bihar, and Khadija, who was related to the legendary writer and filmmaker Khwaja Ahmad Abbas. Deeply rooted in classical traditions, she trained in Kathak under two of the form's most revered gurus, Pandit Birju Maharaj and Munna Shukla, a foundation that shaped her artistic sensibility and stage presence.
Azeem's acting career spans Hindi-language cinema, television serials, and later, digital platforms. She appeared in a range of historical and dramatic productions, including Phir Wahi Talash, Amrapali, The Sword of Tipu Sultan, and Junoon. Her commitment to classical dance remained unwavering; in 2014, she performed at the prestigious PanchTatva annual Kathak festival organized by Birju Maharaj's Kalashram at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan campus in Mumbai. Her personal life has also been closely followed. She married actor Pankaj Kapur in 1979, though the marriage later ended in divorce.
