Sadak1991
Introduction
Sadak (1991) Directed by Mahesh Bhatt, the film stands as one of the most commercially successful Hindi films of its year1991, blending elements of action, romance, and psychological drama. Starring Sanjay Dutt and Pooja Bhatt in the lead roles, the film drew both acclaim and controversy for its stark portrayal of urban alienation, violence, and redemption. Loosely inspired by Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver (1976), Sadak was later remade in Tamil as Appu (2000).
Sanjay Dutt delivers a brooding performance as Ravi Kishore Verma, a taxi driver haunted by a devastating personal tragedy. Pooja Bhatt plays Pooja, a young woman trapped in the brutal world of prostitution. Towering over the narrative is Sadashiv Amrapurkar's chilling portrayal of Maharani, a transgender brothel madam whose ruthless control over a sex-trafficking ring remains one of the most iconic negative roles in Hindi cinema. The ensemble cast includes Deepak Tijori, Neelima Azeem, Avtar Gill, Pankaj Dheer, Soni Razdan, Mushtaq Khan, and Gavin Packard, each contributing to the film's grim urban tapestry.
The story follows Ravi, emotionally scarred after witnessing his sister's death following her exploitation in a brothel. Plagued by insomnia and violent impulses, he finds a chance at redemption when he encounters Pooja, who is forcibly inducted into Maharani's establishment. Determined to save her, Ravi sells his possessions and risks his life to buy her freedom, aided by his friend Gotya, who is himself in love with another captive woman, Chanda. The film culminates in a brutal confrontation in which Ravi destroys the brothel and kills Maharani, ultimately paying for his vigilantism with imprisonment before being reunited with Pooja upon release.
The soundtrack, composed by Nadeem–Shravan and predominantly sung by Anuradha Paudwal alongside leading male vocalists, was a major commercial triumph, selling over five million units. Tumhein Apna Banaane Ki remains enduringly popular. Amrapurkar's performance earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role. A sequel, Sadak 2 (2020), released on Disney + Hotstar, was met with overwhelmingly negative reviews.
