Introduction

Naukri (1954), directed by Bimal Roy for Bimal Roy Productions, was a poignant social romance starring Kishore Kumar and Sheila Ramani. The film explores the shattered dreams and aspirations of educated youth as they struggle to find employment in post-independence India. Both Naukri and Baap Beti (1954) are considered "sensitive" and "memorable" films from Roy, with Naukri particularly highlighting the issue of unemployment. A commercial success, the film also earned critical acclaim.

In a ground-breaking move, Naukri was one of the first films to portray a live-in relationship—an unfamiliar concept at the time—between Rattan (Kumar) and Seema (Sheila Ramani).

Naukri marked a significant moment in Kishore Kumar's career, as it was one of the earliest films where he gained prominence. At this stage, his comic persona had not yet fully developed, so his performance in the film is sincere, sensitive, and restrained.

The film's talented crew included Subodh Basu for the story, Nabendu Ghosh for the screenplay, Paul Mahendra for dialogue, Kamal Bose for photography, Salil Choudhury for music, Shailendra for lyrics, and Hrishikesh Mukherjee as the editor. Interestingly, Salil Chowdhary, the music director, and Bimal Roy were initially skeptical about Kishore Kumar's singing abilities, and was reluctantly brought on as a singer. He proved them wrong with his consummate acting and singing abilities.

Among the notable tracks from the film is "Ek Chhoti Si Naukri Ka Talabgaar Hoon Main," sung by Kishore Kumar, Shyam Mitra, and Shankar Dasgupta, which poignantly reflects the struggles of young men searching for employment. Other memorable songs include "Arzi Hamaari Yeh Marzi Hamaari" and "Chhota Sa Ghar Hoga," both sung by Kumar. The soundtrack also featured performances by Shaila Belle, Shankar Dasgupta, Shyam Mitra, Geeta Dutt, and Lata Mangeshkar. The harmonica in the most popular song "Chhota Sa Ghar Hoga" was played by the renowned Bengali musician Milon Gupta.
