Introduction
Born and brought up in Mumbai, India, Ketaki Sheth started her journey as a street photographer in the 1980s. While committed to using the
monochromatic analogue medium herself, she unequivocally acknowledges
the influence and the mentorship of Raghubir Singh, the pioneer of colour street photography in India.
In 2012 with the purchase of her first digital camera she began her initial experiments with colour. In a project that ran between 2015 to 2018, Sheth visited some of the surviving photo studios across the length and breadth of India. The result was Photo Studio (2018), the project these works are taken from. While the backdrops of the works in the series belong firmly in another era her compositions are contemporary, eschewing the classic rules of photographic portraiture.
She has three other books to her credit - A Certain Grace, The Siddi: Indians of African Descent (2013); Bombay Mix: Street Photographs (2007); Twinspotting: Photographs of Patel Twins in Britain and India (2000).
Sheth’s work has been exhibited extensively internationally as well -at the National Portrait Gallery in London (UK), the Emile Zola Gallery in Aix- en-Provence (France), and the Sepia International Gallery in New York (USA). She has also held solo exhibitions and received accolades such as the Sanskriti Award for Photography in India and the Higashikawa Award in Hokkaido, Japan.
Her work is part of prestigious collections, including those of the National Gallery of Modern Art (India), Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (India), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (USA), and the Peabody Essex Museum (USA).
She currently resides in Mumbai, where she continues to practice her photography.
