Introduction

Janwar (1965) directed by Bhappi Sonie, is a vibrant musical romance starring Shammi Kapoor and Rajshree in the lead roles. Co-written by Sonie and Sachin Bhowmick, the film blends youthful exuberance with themes of love, family pressure, and societal class divides. Its enduring charm lies as much in its storytelling as in its unforgettable music.

The film features a stellar supporting cast, including Rehman, Shyama, Rajendranath Malhotra, Prithviraj Kapoor, Achala Sachdev, Krishan Dhawan, Asit Sen, Madhavi, and Manorama. Other notable appearances include Shivraj as Mehrchand (Sapna's father), Madhumati, Shubha, Farida Dadi, Manmohan, and Keshav Rana.

Set against the backdrop of an affluent Mumbai household, the story revolves around Mr. Shrivastava (Prithviraj Kapoor) and his two sons: the responsible and duty-bound Mahendra (Rehman), and the fun-loving, carefree Sunder (Shammi Kapoor). While Mahendra is burdened by the expectation to marry into wealth, Sunder's journey challenges social conventions, as he falls for the spirited Sapna (Rajshree). The narrative explores how love and individuality clash with societal norms and familial expectations.

A standout moment in Janwar is the song Dekho Ab To Kisi Ko Nahin Hai Khabar, which uses the iconic melody of The Beatles' I Want to Hold Your Hand — a rare and bold musical crossover in Hindi cinema at the time. The film's climax has also been noted for influencing later blockbusters such as Dil and Aashiqui.

Though some sources suggest the film underperformed commercially and describe it as a box office disappointment, Janwar was still ranked seventh among the highest-grossing Hindi films of 1965. The label hit often varies depending on criteria — whether financial success, critical reception, or cultural legacy.

With music composed by Shankar-Jaikishan and lyrics penned by Hasrat Jaipuri, Shailendra, and Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Janwar remains a notable entry in 60s Hindi cinema for its energy, music, and memorable performances.
