Introduction

फ़िल्म की कहानी मुंबई के एक समृद्ध घराने के इर्द-गिर्द रची गई है। इस धनी परिवार में मिस्टर श्रीवास्तव (पृथ्वीराज कपूर) अपने दोनों बेटों के साथ रहते हैं। इनमें बड़ा बेटा कर्तव्यपरायण और ज़िम्मेदार महेंद्र (रहमान) है और छोटा बेटा चंचल, बेफ़िक्र सुंदर (शम्मी कपूर) है। एक ओर जहाँ महेंद्र पर दबाव है कि वह किसी धनाड्य परिवार में विवाह करे, वहीं सुंदर का सफ़र सामाजिक परंपराओं को चुनौती देनेवाला है। वह ज़िन्दादिली से भरी और स्वतंत्र विचारों वाली सपना (राजश्री) से प्रेम करने लगता है। फ़िल्म की कहानी इस टकराव को सामने लाती है कि कैसे प्रेम और उसमें व्यक्तिगत चयन का अधिकार सामाजिक मान्यताओं और पारिवारिक अपेक्षाओं से टकरा जाता है।
इस फ़िल्म का एक प्रमुख आकर्षण इसका गीत “देखो अब तो किसी को नहीं है खबर” था जिसमें नामी रॉकबैंड 'दि बीटल्स के प्रसिद्ध गीत “आई वांट टू होल्ड योर हैंड” की धुन का इस्तेमाल किया गया था। यह उस दौर के हिन्दी सिनेमा में एक दुर्लभ किस्म का संगीत प्रयोग था। इस फ़िल्म का क्लाईमैक्स भी बाद की दूसरी कई कामयाब फ़िल्मों जैसे दिल और आशिकी के क्लाईमैक्स को प्रभावित करने वाला रहा।
हालाँकि कुछ स्रोत बताते हैं कि इस फ़िल्म ने व्यावसायिक रूप से अपेक्षा के अनुसार प्रदर्शन नहीं किया और टिकट खिड़की पर इसके हाथ निराशा ही लगी, फिर भी जानवर को सन् 1965 की सर्वाधिक कमाई करने वाली हिन्दी फ़िल्मों में सातवाँ स्थान दिया जाता है। वैसे भी 'हिट' का दर्जा अक्सर इस पर निर्भर करता है कि आपका मानदंड वित्तीय सफलता है या आलोचनात्मक प्रतिक्रिया है या फ़िल्म का सांस्कृतिक प्रभाव।
