The painting depicts the Cycle of Life and Death. The Bull, powerful, stubborn, obstinate but magnificently imposing being, symbolizes force and radiates energy. The emphasis is on triumph of good forces over evil. In the panel on the RHS bottom corner of the painting are scripts in suggesting wisdom of Man and his thirst for knowledge. The round ball depicts the Sun the provider of Universal energy without which life would cease.

J. Sultan Ali is one of those artists who had taken to drawing as a complete medium of expression, indeed, much before it began being recognized as such… his delineations are quite different and have acquired a rare degree of originality… unlike many others, Sultan Ali’s mystification is not superficial or schematic, as it has nothing to do with the attempt towards achieving contrived, abstract, universal ‘truths’. There is a lot of movement in his drawings a constant preoccupation with experimenting in beautiful folk images common among the backward village folks whose imagination is conditioned by their incomprehension of the forces of nature. Therefore, it is possible to say that his drawings sustain interest, not because there is excessive ‘myth-making’, but due to the fact that various facets of man’s early civilized consciousness have been reinterpreted in a lively, though absolute terms. There is no heavy symbolism, nor abstract geometrical ‘discipline’, though its impact can be seen in some of the drawings…
Symbolically depicted here is a beautiful, well-formed village maiden with large and expressive eyes, eagerly moving forward with a smile on her lips in anticipation of good things in her future life. Instead she comes across persons green with jealousy, evil spirits (owls) and evil minded human beings. Yellow scripted figures on the top suggest good forces which will in the end help her overcome the hazards being faced.
In 2005, the artist achieved a new high in the auction market with the sale of Vrisabha Surya (1987), offered in the Masterpieces and Museum Quality Series: Indian Contemporary Art by Osian's, which concluded on 02 December 2005 at Mumbai, achieving a sale price of ₹18,40,000 ($39,895.92). This record marked a defining moment in the artist's market history, reflecting both the significance of the artwork and its reception within the broader art world.
In 2004, the artist achieved a new high in the auction market with the sale of Adivasi Bhumi Mata (1989), offered in the The Masterpieces & Museum Quality Series: Indian Contemporary Art – Books, Paintings & Sculpture by Osian's, which concluded on 15 October 2004 at New Delhi, achieving a sale price of ₹9,20,388 ($20,070). This record marked a defining moment in the artist's market history, reflecting both the significance of the artwork and its reception within the broader art world.
On 12 June 1995, made their debut in the Indian public auction market when Sonajard-Surya was presented as Lot in Contemporary Indian Paintings: From The Chester and Davida Herwitz Charitable Trust, conducted by Sotheby's in New York, USA. This auction marked the artist's first recorded appearance in the public auction market, establishing the earliest chapter of their auction history.
In 2006, an artwork by J. Sultan Ali was featured on the cover of Osians: Historical Series III (November 2006, New York), marking a documented highlight in the artist's public and auction market visibility.

Public Auction Market (1987–2026) | Select Indicators
Annual Auction Sale Turnover
It aggregates all sales across global auction houses into yearly totals.
Analysis reflected in the chart:
The turnover graph highlights periods of strong growth, moments of market correction, and resilience during downturns. Peaks often align with landmark works coming to public auction, while troughs may indicate reduced supply or weaker demand. Over time, the curve illustrates the overall trajectory of J. Sultan Ali’s public auction market presence.
Average Sale Price Per Lot
It smooths out fluctuations caused by the quantity of works offered and focuses on the Average Sale Price level per artwork.
Analysis reflected in the chart:
Rising average sale prices indicate growing collector confidence and a stronger willingness to pay higher amounts per work. Assuming the mix of mediums remains relatively stable over time, the proportion of works on paper typically priced lower than works on canvas adds important context to understanding these market movements.
Square Inch Rate Trend
This allows fair comparisons between smaller works and larger canvases.
Analysis reflected in the chart:
The Square Inch Rate shown in the graph combines various medium types such as canvas, paper, board, and others. Historically, works on canvas and board have broadly commanded higher prices compared to works on paper.
