Introduction

House No. 44 (1955), directed by M. K. Burman and produced by Dev Anand under his banner Navketan Films, starred Dev Anand and his newly married wife, Kalpana Kartik. The couple had tied the knot during the filming of their earlier collaboration, Taxi Driver.

The story follows Ashok (Dev Anand), a man working for the notorious gangster Sunder (Bhagwan Sinha). One day, Ashok stumbles upon a dead body and reports it to the police, which leads him to cross paths with Nimmo (Kalpana Kartik). The two fall in love, and Nimmo urges Ashok to leave his criminal life behind and settle down with her. Although Ashok agrees, he soon finds himself struggling to make ends meet without the comforts of his gangster life. Disillusioned and hungry, Ashok ultimately realizes that he is better off staying with Sunder. The rest of the film portrays Ashok's inner conflict as he tries to decide whether to remain with Nimmo or return to his life of crime.

Despite a weak storyline that failed to captivate audiences for long, House No. 44 is remembered for its beautiful music. The soundtrack, composed by S. D. Burman with lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi, features popular songs like Hemant Kumar's rendering of Chup Hai Dharti Chup Hain Chand Sitaare, Lata's Phaili Hui Hain Sapnon Ki Baahein, and Teri Duniya Mein Jeene Se, also sung by Hemant Kumar are memorable till day. These melodious tracks were a major highlight of the film and prevented it from being completely forgotten.

Ultimately, it was Dev Anand's flamboyance, charismatic appeal, and enduring popularity that attracted many fans to the film, giving it a charm that outweighed its flaws.
