Introduction

Hindustan Ki Kasam (1973) is another war film directed by Chetan Anand, and centered around Operation Cactus Lilly during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Anand, who had previously directed the popular war film Haqeeqat (1964) about the Sino-Indian War, faced high audience expectations for this new project. However, Hindustan Ki Kasam was less commercial in nature, adopting a more documentary-style approach to depicting the Indian Air Force's (IAF) role in the 1971 conflict, particularly in the western sector. There were indeed rumors circulating at the time about a romantic relationship between Chetan Anand and Priya Rajvansh, who had earlier played the titular role of Heer. This speculation, combined with some critiques of Priya Rajvansh's acting, contributed to the film's underperformance. The film's failure was also seen as a combination of changing audience tastes, a lack of strong box-office chemistry, and the alleged behind-the-scenes dynamics, including Chetan Anand's personal involvement with Rajvansh.
The plot focuses on the IAF's mission to destroy a Pakistani Air Force (PAF) radar, which jams IAF pilots' radios during combat. The Indian intelligence agency plants Mohini, a woman who is a lookalike of Tahira, the fiancée of a PAF pilot. Mohini travels to Pakistan and takes up a job as a singer at a Pakistan Television (PTV) studio, where the radar system is housed. While performing, she secretly informs the IAF about the radar jammer's location. The IAF plans a raid and arranges for her to leave the building after her performance, allowing them to carry out their mission.
Several songs from the film became chartbusters, notably the iconic Hindustan Ki Qasam, Hindustan Ki Qasam by Manna Dey and Mohammed Rafi, Har Taraf Ab Yehi Afsane Hai, Ham Teri Aankhon Ke Diwane Hai also by Manna Dey, and the beautiful Lata Mangeshkar melody Hai Tere Saath Meri Wafa.

हिंदुस्तान की कसम (1973) के निर्देशक भी चेतन आनंद थे, जो इससे पहले हक़ीक़त (1964) जैसी यादगार युद्ध फ़िल्म बना चुके थे। आनंद की यह फ़िल्म 1971 के भारत-पाकिस्तान युद्ध के समय भारत की ओर से हुए 'ऑपरेशन कैक्टस लिली' के घटनाक्रम पर आधारित है। इससे पहले भारत-चीन युद्ध पर इतनी लोकप्रिय और क्लासिक मानी जाने वाली फ़िल्म बना चुके चेतन आनंद की इस नई युद्ध फ़िल्म के प्रति दर्शकों के मन में उम्मीदों और अपेक्षाओं का बड़ा पहाड़ खड़ा था। पर हिंदुस्तान की कसम अपनी प्रकृति से उस किस्म की व्यावसायिक फ़िल्म नहीं थी जिसका एकमात्र लक्ष्य टिकट खिड़की पर ज़्यादा से ज़्यादा पैसा कमाना हो।
इस फ़िल्म में 1971 के युद्ध में पश्चिमी कमान पर भारतीय वायु सेना की भूमिका पर फोकस था और अधिक प्रामाणिकता हासिल करने के लिए फ़िल्म दस्तावेज़ी फ़िल्म शैली का इस्तेमाल कर रही थी। कुछ ही समय पहले चेतन आनंद की हीर रांझा (1970) में हीर की मुख्य भूमिका निभाने वाली नायिका प्रिया राजवंश और निर्देशक आनंद के बीच रोमांस की बातें भी फ़िल्म की रिलीज़ के वक्त हवा में तैर रही थीं। फ़िल्म की टिकट खिड़की पर नाकामयाबी के पीछे कई कारण गिने गए जिनमें दर्शकों की बदलती पसंद, पर्दे पर नायक-नायिका की मज़बूत जोड़ी न बनना, चेतन आनंद के प्रिया राजवंश के साथ निजी रिश्ते की अफ़वाहें, और राजवंश की कमजोर अभिनय प्रतिभा जैसी वजहें मुख्य रहीं।
फ़िल्म की कहानी भारतीय वायुसेना के उस मिशन पर केंद्रित है जिसमें वे पाकिस्तानी वायुसेना के रडार को नष्ट करने के अभियान पर जाते हैं। इसी रडार के चलते युद्ध में भारतीय पायलटों के रेडियो जाम हो रहे हैं। भारतीय खुफिया एजेंसी एक भारतीय लड़की मोहिनी को पाकिस्तान भेजती है। मोहिनी एक पाकिस्तानी पायलट की मंगेतर महिला ताहिरा की हमशक्ल है। पाकिस्तान जाकर वह वहाँ पाकिस्तान टेलीविजन (पीटीवी) के स्टूडियो में एक गायिका के रूप में नौकरी हासिल कर लेती है। इसी स्टूडियो में सेना का रडार सिस्टम लगा हुआ है। वहीं टेलीविजन पर गाते हुए एक दिन वह गुप्त तरीके से रडार जैमर के सही स्थान के बारे में भारतीय वायुसेना को सूचित कर देती है। भारतीय वायुसेना हमले की योजना बनाती है और वक्त रहते मोहिनी के उस इमारत से बाहर निकलने की व्यवस्था करती है, जिससे सेना अपने मिशन को अंजाम दे सके
इस फ़िल्म के कई गाने लोकप्रिय हुए जिनमें मन्ना डे और मोहम्मद रफ़ी का गाया यादगार गीत “हिंदुस्तान की कसम, हिंदुस्तान की कसम”, मन्ना डे का गाया “हर तरफ़ अब यही अफ़साने हैं, हम तेरी आँखों के दीवाने हैं” और लता मंगेशकर का गाया खूबसूरत गीत “है तेरे साथ मेरी वफ़ा” प्रमुख हैं।
