Gieve belongs rightfully to the long realist tradition. He has always worked out his paintings as though he were a man groping in a flickering darkness, aware that the gestalt we spoke of above - the figure structural relationship between the figure and the environment - is more than ever difficult to work out in painterly terms because of our very inability to perceive the indispensable relationships on which society rests.
