Ehsan (1954): featured artwork

Introduction

Ehsan (1954) Directed by Rajendra Sharma under the banner of Mohla Films, Ehsan was produced by J. G. Mohla and featured a notable cast including Shammi Kapoor, Munawwar Sultana, Prithviraj Kapoor, Gulab, Naaz, K. N. Singh, and Roopmala. The film is particularly significant for bringing together Prithviraj Kapoor and his son Shammi Kapoor in lead roles—marking the first and only time the legendary father-son duo shared screen space in such capacity. This rare collaboration adds both sentimental and cinematic value, especially within the legacy of Bollywood's Kapoor dynasty.

The musical score, composed by Madan Mohan with lyrics by D. N. Madhok and Kaif Irfani, stands out for its soulful depth. Among its six songs, one track in particular—“Hamen Dil Mein Basa Bhi Lo” sung by Begum Akhtar—was never released commercially, making it a rare gem for collectors and music historians. The soundtrack also features performances by icons Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. Two songs gained popularity upon release: Lata's Unki Nazron Ka Vaar and Asha's Ik Baar Keh Do Sajan Tum Mera.

In terms of box office performance, no reliable financial data is available. Ehsan does not appear among the top-grossing Hindi films of 1954—such as Nagin, Mirza Ghalib, Taxi Driver, and Boot Polish—as listed in year-end charts. This absence, combined with limited archival tracking from the era, suggests that Ehsan was likely a modest or average performer commercially, rather than a breakout hit.
