Introduction

Do Ustad (1959) is a crime thriller directed by Tara Harish and produced by Sheikh Mukhtar, who also starred in the film alongside Raj Kapoor and Madhubala. As one of the earliest Bollywood films to explore the now-iconic "lost and found" trope, it follows two brothers separated in childhood who grow up to become criminals. The story drew inspiration from earlier classics like Kismet (1943), while carving out its own place in Hindi cinema.

The plot revolves around orphaned brothers Jagannath (Sheikh Mukhtar) and Rajan (Raj Kapoor), who are driven into lives of crime by poverty. Jagannath becomes a hardened criminal leading a double life, while Rajan, unaware of their familial bond, ends up assisting the police in pursuing him. Their paths converge in a gripping climax involving a police chase and a dramatic family reunion.

Filmed over two years, from 1957 to early 1959, Do Ustad was met with moderate critical reception but proved to be a commercial success. It grossed ₹11 million, with a net of ₹5.5 million, and enjoyed a Silver Jubilee run, playing in theatres for over 25 weeks. Despite its box office performance, some critics remained skeptical. Film writer Uma Vasudev, writing in Thought, described it as a "second-grade version of Shree 420," criticizing Raj Kapoor for recycling his familiar persona and finding Sheikh Mukhtar ill-suited to his role—though she praised Madhubala as "delightful."

Raj Kapoor and Madhubala had previously shared the screen in films like Dil Ki Rani (1947) and Amar Prem (1948), and their chemistry remained a highlight here as well.

The film's music, composed by O. P. Nayyar, played a significant role in its popularity. Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, and Shamshad Begum delivered several hit songs that struck a chord with audiences. Standout tracks include Rik Rik, Tik Tik, Boom Boom Chik and Tere Dil Ka Makaan Saiyan Bada Aalishaan, both lively duets by Rafi and Bhosle. Other memorable numbers include Tu Ladki Main Ladka, Tujhe Dekh Kaleja Dhadka, and the energetic ensemble song Hum Pe Dil Aaya To Bolo Kya Karoge, Humne Tadpaya To Bolo Kya Karoge.
