Introduction

Diwana (1967) Directed by Mahesh Kaul and produced under the Anupam Chitra banner, the film starred Raj Kapoor, Saira Banu, and Lalita Pawar in key roles. Though not a blockbuster, the film was a commercial success and emerged as the fourth highest-grossing Hindi film of 1967. This film marked the only on-screen collaboration between Raj Kapoor and Saira Banu. It is also noted for Kamal Kapoor's powerful performance as Raj Kapoor's on-screen father.

The film's narrative, however, was considered clichéd by critics. Raj Kapoor played Pyarelal, a simple, naive young man who was orphaned at birth and raised by a kind Muslim landlady, Fatima (Lalita Pawar), who treated him as her own son. During a journey, he meets and falls in love with Kamini Gupta (Saira Banu). Unexpectedly, her guardian, Sir Mayadas (Kamal Kapoor), is revealed to be Pyarelal's biological father. The plot takes a dramatic turn when Pyarelal is arrested for murder. While everyone finds it hard to believe that such a gentle soul could commit a violent act, their assumptions are shattered when he confesses in court and demands the death penalty.

Despite the storyline being described by critics as a "major letdown," the film drew audiences and managed to do well at the box office.

Diwana is also remembered for its memorable music by Shankar-Jaikishan, with lyrics penned by Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra. Several songs from the film remain popular, such as the Mukesh solos Diwana Mujhko Log Kahein, Jisne Tumhe Chand Si Surat, and Hum To Jate Apne Gaon. Another noteworthy song is Tumhari Bhi Jai Jai, rendered as solos by both Mukesh and Sharda.

Sharda, rumored to be Jaikishan's favorite, was occasionally preferred over the reigning melody queens Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. While Sharda's distinctive nasal tone found a limited following, she never achieved the level of success enjoyed by the Mangeshkar sisters, who dominated the Indian film music industry with their divine voices, immense talent, and relentless dedication.
