Introduction
Dil Se is Mani Ratnam's first venture into Hindi cinema and the final film of his Terrorism Trilogy. It is a profound exploration of love set against the politically volatile backdrop of India in the 1990s, in the wake of insurgency of northeastern states. The film dramatises the tragic attraction between Amar(Shah Rukh Khan), a radio journalist from Delhi, and Meghna(Manisha Koirala), a mysterious woman from Assam, as they navigate the dangerous terrain of insurgency and rebellion. Their love represents a clash of two worlds-one from the heart of India and the other from its periphery, i.e., Delhi and Assam, respectively-while also embodying opposites in the eyes of society and the law.
Set during a time of deep political unrest, Dil Se reflects the turmoil of a nation grappling with violent insurgencies, religious conflicts, and the fragile idea of nationalism. The film's context is rooted in a tense period following the Khalistani movement, the Babri Masjid riots, and increased ethnic insurgencies in the North East and Kashmir. Mani Ratnam's narrative touches on the fractured national identities, capturing the sense of revolt and resistance against a problematic homogenising nationalism in India's 50th year of independence. Against this backdrop, Dil Se emerges as both a personal love story and a reflection on the consequences of these deep political fissures.
Complementing its powerful story is A.R. Rahman's brilliant soundtrack, with evergreen songs like "Chhaiyan Chhaiyan" and "Jiya Jale" standing out for their mesmerising music and beautifully choreographed sequences shot in various parts of the country.
देश की आज़ादी की 50वीं सालगिरह की ऐतिहासिक घड़ी पर स्थित दिल से की कहानी हिंसक विद्रोहों, धार्मिक संघर्षों और राष्ट्रवाद की आपस में टकराती विविध परिभाषाओं में उलझे और गहरी राजनीतिक अशांति से जूझते मुल्क के संकटों को दर्शाती है। इस फ़िल्म को पंजाब में उठे खालिस्तान आन्दोलन, बाबरी मस्जिद ध्वंस के बाद मुल्क में हुए दंगों और उत्तर-पूर्व, कश्मीर जैसे इलाकों में फैले जातीय-धार्मिक विद्रोह और आतंकवाद के बाद के तनावपूर्ण दौर के संदर्भ में रखकर समझा जाना चाहिए। मणिरत्नम का कथानक मुल्क की खंडित राष्ट्रीय पहचान का सवाल उठाता है। भारत की स्वतंत्रता के 50वें वर्ष में बुलन्द होते राष्ट्रवाद के समस्याग्रस्त इकसार चेहरे के विरुद्ध सर उठाते प्रतिरोध और विद्रोह की भावना का चित्रण फ़िल्म के कथानक का आधार है। इस पृष्ठभूमि पर रची दिल से दो इंसानों के बीच उभरे चुंबकीय आकर्षण से रची प्रेम कहानी भी है और इस मुल्क की ज़मीन पर खिंची इन गहरी राजनीतिक दरारों का प्रतिबिम्ब भी है।
इस प्रभावशाली कथानक को संगीतकार ए.आर. रहमान का शानदार संगीत और बुलन्दी देता है। फ़िल्म के गाने गुलज़ार ने लिखे हैं और उनके लिखे गीत के बोलों में सूफ़ी भक्ति और प्रेम से उपजे बिम्बों का गहरा इस्तेमाल मिलता है। ऊटी के पास के पर्वतीय इलाके में नीलगिरी एक्सप्रेस रेलगाड़ी पर फ़िल्माए गए “छैयाँ छैयाँ” गीत ने सिनेमैटोग्राफ़र संतोष सिवान के यादगार फ़िल्मांकन और नृत्य में शाहरुख़-मलाइका की मोहक जुगलबन्दी से अभूतपूर्व लोकप्रियता हासिल की। मंत्रमुग्ध कर देनेवाले संगीत और आकर्षक कोरियोग्राफ़ी से सजे फ़िल्म के “जिया जले” और “सतरंगी रे” जैसे लोकप्रिय गाने तमिलनाडु से लेकर लद्दाख तक भारत की दक्षिण-उत्तर सीमाओं पर बसी मनमोहक जगहों पर फ़िल्माए गए और इसने फ़िल्म को एक अखिल भारतीय चेहरा दिया।
