Mani Ratnam
Mani Ratnam (born Gopalaratnam Subramaniam on 2 June 1956) He is one of India's most distinguished film directors, producers, and screenwriters. Primarily associated with Tamil cinema, he has also directed acclaimed films in Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada. Widely regarded as one of the most influential filmmakers in Indian cinema, Ratnam is celebrated for combining artistic sophistication with commercial success while redefining contemporary Indian filmmaking.
Born into a Tamil Iyer family in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, Ratnam was raised in Chennai in a family closely connected to the film industry. His father, S. Gopalaratnam, was a film distributor with Venus Pictures, while his uncle, Venus Krishnamurthy, was a noted film producer. Despite this cinematic background, he developed an interest in films only during his school years at Besant Theosophical School, where he became an admirer of actors such as Sivaji Ganesan and Nagesh and was deeply influenced by the works of director K. Balachander. He completed a Bachelor's degree in Commerce from Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College, University of Madras, followed by an MBA in Finance from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai. Before entering the film industry, he worked as a management consultant.
Ratnam made his directorial debut with the Kannada film Pallavi Anu Pallavi (1983). Although his initial films achieved limited commercial success, his breakthrough came with Mouna Ragam (1986), which established him as a leading filmmaker in Tamil cinema and earned him his first Filmfare Award for Best Director. He subsequently directed critically acclaimed works such as Nayakan (1987), Anjali (1990), Thalapathi (1991), Roja (1992), Bombay (1995), Dil Se..
