Bombay1995
Introduction
The narrative follows Shekhar (Arvind Swamy), an orthodox Hindu journalism student, who falls in love with Shaila Banu(Manisha Koirala), a Muslim schoolgirl, during a visit to their coastal Tamil Nadu village. Their relationship faces intense opposition from both families because of religious differences, forcing the couple to leave their village and move to the rapidly developing metropolis of Bombay in search of a new beginning. Their life together remains peaceful until communal violence erupts across the city following the Babri Masjid demolition. The riots disrupt their family and separate them from their children. Amid widespread destruction and fear, Shekhar and Shaila search through violence-affected streets and hospitals in an attempt to reunite with their family. The devastating consequences of hatred eventually compel members of the opposing communities to abandon violence, leading to reconciliation, an emotional family reunion, and a strong appeal for communal harmony.
Released on 10 March 1995, Bombay received widespread critical acclaim and achieved commercial success. It was screened at several international film festivals, including the Philadelphia Film Festival in 1996. The film's music, composed by A. R. Rahman, became one of the most celebrated soundtracks in Indian cinema and earned him his fourth consecutive Filmfare Award for Best Music Director Tamil. The album includes iconic songs such as Kannalane, Tu Hi Re¸Kuchi Kuchi Rakkamma, and Humma Humma, officially titled Antha Arabic Kadaloram in Tamil. Featuring the distinctive vocals of Goan singer Remo Fernandes and the memorable Bombay Theme instrumental, the soundtrack established Rahman's lasting influence on Indian film music.
Despite its acclaim, Bombay generated controversy because of its portrayal of an inter-religious marriage between a Hindu man and a Muslim woman. The film was banned in Singapore and Malaysia upon release. Ratnam described the film as a positive exploration of communal harmony, emphasising that the riots served as a backdrop to depict the experiences of ordinary people affected by violence.
The film received numerous honours, including the National Film Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration, the Filmfare Award for Best Film Tamil, the In Spirit for Freedom Award at the Jerusalem Film Festival, and the Special Award from the Political Film Society USA in 1996. In 2005, Lalitha Gopalan's study of the film was published by BFI Modern Classics, examining its production, themes, and cultural impact. Bombaywas also recognised among the top twenty Indian films in the British Film Institute's rankings. The Hindi dubbed version achieved significant commercial success, becoming one of the ten highest-grossing Hindi films of 1995.
