Introduction

Banwra (1950) directed by G. Rakesh — pseudonym of Raghupat Roy Kapur, the grandfather of actor Aditya Roy Kapur — was a notable Hindi film of its time, headlined by Raj Kapoor and Nimmi in the lead roles. The supporting cast featured prominent actors such as K. N. Singh, Lalita Pawar, and child artist Ratan Kumar, each contributing significantly to the film's dramatic depth.

One of Banwra's most enduring legacies lies in its music, composed by Krishan Dayal. The film featured several iconic songs that captured the hearts of audiences, showcasing the voices of some of the greatest playback singers of the era. Mohammed Rafi lent his powerful voice to standout tracks like Sahil Jo Dubo De Kashti and the hauntingly beautiful Shama Jalti Hai To Parwane Chale Aate Hain, the latter being a duet with the legendary Geeta Dutt.Geeta Dutt also delivered a string of emotive performances with songs such as Meri Duniya Ki Shayad, Do Din Ka Mela Hai, and the energetic Aaja Aaja Aaja Aaja. Her versatility and vocal expressiveness were evident throughout the soundtrack.

Though Lata Mangeshkar had already begun her career in the 1940s with songs like Mata Ek Sapoot for the Marathi film Gaja Bhau (1944) and Paa Lagoon Kar Jori for the Hindi film Aap Ki Seva Mein (1946), Banwra marked an early milestone in her ascent as a dominant force in Indian playback singing. Her solo renditions in the film— Shama Jalti Hai To (solo version) and Zulmi Naina Balam Ke—were well received and hinted at the remarkable journey that lay ahead for the singer who would go on to rule the music industry for over five decades.

Another popular number from the film was Is Dil Ka Bangla Khali sung by Shamshad Begum, a stalwart in her own right. Her earthy, resonant voice added a distinct charm to the song and contributed to the overall richness of the soundtrack.

In retrospect, Banwra stands not just as a film of cinematic value, but also as a significant chapter in the history of Hindi film music, bringing together a powerhouse of talent that shaped the golden era of Bollywood.
