Introduction

Bandish (1955) is a poignant black-and-white film featuring a stellar cast that included Ashok Kumar, Meena Kumari, and Daisy Irani in pivotal roles. Directed by Satyen Bose, the film revolves around the story of Tomato (Daisy Irani), a young orphan who learns from her dying guardian that playboy Kamal (Ashok Kumar) is her estranged father. Kamal, initially reluctant and seeking ways to escape his newfound responsibility, is forced to take the child in.

Despite its grim tone, the film's narrative unfolds as a hopeful journey, with viewers knowing that Tomato will eventually find someone to care for her. Whether it's Kamal, the kind-hearted Usha (Meena Kumari), or another compassionate figure, the film maintains a sense of warmth. In a refreshing deviation from typical portrayals of orphans, the characters are not cruel to the child; instead, they show genuine concern and care for her well-being, adding a layer of humanity to the story.

The film's music, composed by Hemant Kumar, played a crucial role in enhancing its emotional depth. With six memorable songs, it featured Lata Mangeshkar's haunting solos like Raat Hai Suhani, Tumhari Yaad Mein, and Jhoomti Jawani Hai, as well as Hemant Kumar's own Yeh Duniya Ek Sagar Hai and Asha Bhosle's soulful Mohe Apna Bana Lo. बंदिश (1955) एक जज़्बातों से भरी श्वेत-श्याम फ़िल्म है जिसमें अशोक कुमार, मीना कुमारी और डेज़ी ईरानी जैसे अपने दौर के बेहतरीन कलाकारों ने महत्वपूर्ण भूमिकाएँ निभाईं है। सत्येन बोस द्वारा निर्देशित इस फ़िल्म की कहानी टमाटर (डेज़ी इरानी) नामक एक छोटी अनाथ बच्ची के किरदार के इर्द-गिर्द घूमती है। टमाटर को उसके मृत्युशय्या पर पड़े अभिभावक से मालूम पड़ता है कि अय्याशी भरा जीवन जीने वाला एक इंसान कमल (अशोक कुमार) ही असल में उसका खोया हुआ पिता है। शुरुआत में तो कमल अपने ऊपर आ पड़ी इस नई ज़िम्मेदारी से बचकर निकलने की कोशिश करता है, लेकिन परिस्थितियाँ कुछ ऐसी बनती है कि उसे बच्ची की ज़िम्मेदारी उठानी ही पड़ती है।
हालाँकि फ़िल्म की कहानी गंभीर किस्म की लगती है लेकिन इसे इस तरह से पेश किया गया है कि फ़िल्म में हमेशा ही एक उम्मीद की किरण दिखाई देती रहती है और माहौल खुशनुमा बना रहता है। दर्शकों के मन में यह भरोसा सदा बना रहता है कि आखिर में टमाटर को कोई न कोई सहृदय ऐसा मिलेगा जो उसे खूब प्यार देगा और उसकी देखभाल करेगा। फिर चाहे वह कमल का किरदार हो या बच्ची के लिए मन में स्नेह रखनेवाली सहृदय ऊषा (मीना कुमारी) का किरदार या कोई और करुणामय पात्र। यह फ़िल्म अनाथ बच्चों को लेकर उस समय की दूसरी फ़िल्मों में प्रचलित छवियों को नहीं दोहराती। यहाँ उन्हें मिलनेवाले सभी पात्र क्रूर नहीं हैं बल्कि अक्सर वे बच्चों के प्रति सहानुभूति और चिंता दिखाते हैं जिससे कहानी में मानवीय संवेदना की एक नवीन परत जुड़ती है।
बंदिश फ़िल्म के लिए संगीत हेमंत कुमार ने तैयार किया था और इसका प्रभावशाली संगीत फ़िल्म के जज़्बाती असर को और गाढ़ा करता है। इस फ़िल्म में छह यादगार गीत हैं जिनमें लता मंगेशकर के स्वर में “रात है सुहानी”, “तुम्हारी याद में” और “झूमती जवानी है” जैसे दूर तक याद रहनेवाले एकल गीत शामिल हैं। इसके साथ ही खुद हेमंत कुमार का गाया “ये दुनिया एक सागर है” और आशा भोंसले की आवाज़ में भावनात्मक “मोहे अपना बना लो” जैसे गीत शामिल हैं। ये सभी गीत ऐसे यादगार रहे कि आज भी सुननेवालों की स्मृतियों में गूंजते हैं।
