Introduction

Anpadh (1962), directed by Mohan Kumar, stressed upon the importance of education for women. The story of a woman who grows up unlettered because her doting brother is a rich man, who believes making money is more important than acquiring academic proficiency. Its simplistic, melodramatic plot was radical for the times and touched upon a theme that was to acquire far greater urgency and centrality in the decades to follow. The film had Balraj Sahni as the brother, Mala Sinha as the sister and Dharmendra as a rich and well-read young man who marries the woman unaware of her illiteracy. The successful and abiding partnership of music director Madan Mohan and lyricist Raja Mehdi Ali Khan yielded the classic Lata Mangeshkar numbers Aapki nazron ne samjha hai pyaar ke qaabil mujhe and Jiya le gayo ji mora sanwariya, the latter performed on screen by newcomer Bindu in her first notable appearance in a film.

अनपढ़ (1962) के निर्देशक मोहन कुमार थे। इस फ़िल्म की कहानी स्त्री शिक्षा की महत्ता पर ज़ोर देती थी जो कि स्वतंत्रता प्राप्ति के बाद के भारत में एक प्रमुख सुधारवादी आन्दोलन रहा। कथानक एक ऐसी स्त्री के इर्द-गिर्द घूमता है जिसे उसके दौलतमंद बड़े भाई ने उसे खूब लाड़ से पाला, लेकिन उसे शिक्षा नहीं दिलवाई क्योंकि उसका मानना है कि दौलत के आगे शिक्षा का कोई मूल्य नहीं। हालांकि फ़िल्म की कहानी नाटकीय सरलीकरण से भरी थी लेकिन आर्थिक तरक्की के बरक्स स्त्री शिक्षा को रखना उस समय के हिसाब से काफ़ी क्रांतिकारी विचार था और भविष्य में इस विचार की प्रासंगिकता और बढ़ने ही वाली थी। फ़िल्म में बड़े भाई की केंद्रीय भूमिका में अभिनेता बलराज साहनी थे और उनकी लाड़ली पर निरक्षर छोटी बहन लज्जो की भूमिका में अभिनेत्री माला सिन्हा थीं। फ़िल्म में अभिनेता धर्मेंद्र ने एक ऐसे अमीर और पढ़े-लिखे नौजवान दीपक की भूमिका निभाई थी जो फ़िल्म की नायिका लज्जो से बिना यह जाने कि वो निरक्षर है, शादी कर लेता है। इस फ़िल्म के संगीतकार मदन मोहन थे और गीतकार राजा मेहदी अली खान। इन दोनों की जोड़ी की लम्बी चली कामयाब जुगलबन्दी ने कितने ही सदाबहार गीत हिन्दी सिनेमा को दिये। इस फ़िल्म में भी उन्होंने लता मंगेशकर के गाये “आपकी नजरों ने समझा, प्यार के काबिल मुझे” और “जिया ले गयो जी मोरा सांवरिया” जैसे यादगार गीत चाहनेवालों को दिये। इनमें से दूसरा गीत नवोदित अभिनेत्री बिंदू पर फ़िल्माया गया था, जो किसी भी फ़िल्म में उनकी पहली उल्लेखनीय भूमिका थी।
