Introduction

Abhilasha (1968) is a romantic drama starring Meena Kumari, Sanjay Khan, Nanda, and Rehman, and was directed by Amit Bose. The film's producer, who was also a builder, famously paid Meena Kumari with a bungalow in lieu of her fee.
The film explores a mother-son relationship with a unique twist, though it ultimately falls into melodrama. The storyline is fairly predictable: Arun (Sanjay Khan), a soon-to-be-married army officer, rejects his adoptive mother, Meena (Meena Kumari), after discovering that he was adopted by Major General Ranjeet Singh (Rehman) and his wife. The couple, who had adopted Arun, also had a biological son, Ajay (Kashinath Ghanekar).
Though the film was commercially successful, it is particularly remembered for its music. The collaboration between leading actress Nanda and Sanjay Khan was well-received by audiences, and their on-screen pairing was widely appreciated. Nanda, who had previously gained fame for her iconic role as Chhoti Behan in Chhoti Behan, took some time to break out of this image. While her pairings with Jeetendra and Sanjay Khan were successful, her collaborations with other younger actors like Navin Nischol, Vinod Mehra, Deb Mukerji, and Parikshat Sahni did not achieve the same success and started to fade over time.
The music, composed by R.D. Burman with lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri, is a highlight of the film. The song Wadiyan Mera Daman remains a classic, renowned for its exquisite composition, and it secured a spot in the top 25 of the Binaca Geetmala charts in 1969. Other timeless melodies, including Pyar Hua Hai Jab Se (sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar) and Munne Mere Aa (sung by Asha Bhosle), have continued to resonate with audiences over the years.

"अभिलाषा" (1968) के निर्देशक अमित बोस थे और यह एक रोमांटिक ड्रामा फ़िल्म थी। इस फ़िल्म में मीना कुमारी, संजय खान, नंदा और रहमान ने मुख्य भूमिकाएँ निभाई थीं। इस फ़िल्म के निर्माता इमारतें बनाने के धंधे में थे और बात मशहूर है कि उन्होंने इस फ़िल्म के लिए मीना कुमारी को फ़ीस के बदले में एक बंगला दिया था।
फ़िल्म की कहानी के केंद्र में माँ-बेटे का रिश्ता है, लेकिन यहाँ उसे एक नए नज़रिये से दिखाने की कोशिश की गई है। हालाँकि, आख़िर तक पहुँचते-पहुँचते इसकी कहानी मेलोड्रामा में डूब जाती है। फ़िल्म का कथानक कुछ यूँ है कि अपनी शादी के पहले, जब नौजवान सेना अधिकारी अरुण (संजय खान) को यह पता चलता है कि वह मेजर जनरल रंजीत सिंह (रहमान) और मीना (मीना कुमारी) की अपनी संतान नहीं है और उसे गोद लिया गया था, तो वह अपनी माँ को ठुकरा देता है। गोद ली संतान के अलावा इस दंपति का एक अपना बेटा भी है, जिसका नाम अजय (काशीनाथ घाणेकर) है।
हालाँकि फ़िल्म व्यावसायिक रूप से सफल रही, लेकिन इसे ख़ास तौर पर इसके संगीत के लिए याद किया जाता है। फ़िल्म में अपने दौर की मशहूर नायिका नंदा की संजय खान के साथ जोड़ी को दर्शकों ने खूब सराहा और पर्दे पर उनकी जुगलबन्दी को काफ़ी पसंद किया गया। नंदा को इससे कुछ साल पहले छोटी बहन (1959) फ़िल्म में अपने छोटी बहन के किरदार से बहुत प्रसिद्धि हासिल हुई थी और कुछ हद तक वह खुद को अपनी इस छवि में कैद भी महसूस कर रही थीं। नंदा ने साठ के दशक में देव आनंद, शशि कपूर और राजेश खन्ना के साथ कई कामयाब फ़िल्में दीं। बाद में कुछ फ़िल्मों में उनकी जोड़ी जीतेंद्र और संजय खान के साथ भी सफल रही। लेकिन सन् 1973 के बाद नवीन निश्‍चल, विनोद मेहरा, देव मुखर्जी और परीक्षित साहनी जैसे नए युवा अभिनेताओं के साथ उनकी फ़िल्मों को कामयाबी नहीं मिली और उनकी लोकप्रियता धीरे-धीरे घटने लगी।
अभिलाषा में राहुल देव बर्मन का संगीत था और इसके गीत मजरूह सुल्तानपुरी ने लिखे थे। फ़िल्म का सबसे लोकप्रिय गीत रहा "वादियाँ मेरा दामन", जिसे आज भी एक यादगार गाना कहकर चाहनेवाले सुनते हैं। यह गाना साल 1969 की 'बिनाका गीतमाला' की शीर्ष 25 गीतों की वार्षिक सूची में भी शामिल रहा। इसके अलावा लता मंगेशकर और किशोर कुमार का गाया "प्यार हुआ है जब से" और आशा भोंसले का गाया "मुन्ने मेरे आ" जैसे फ़िल्म के गीत आज तक श्रोताओं के बीच लोकप्रिय बने हुए हैं।
