Introduction
Abdullah (1980) was a romantic drama film directed by Sanjay Khan, starring Raj Kapoor, Sanjay Khan, Zeenat Aman, and Danny Denzongpa in lead roles, with Sanjeev Kumar, Madan Puri, Sujit Kumar, Mehmood, Om Prakash, Kader Khan, and Farida Jalal in supporting roles. The screenplay was written by George Marzbetuny, and the dialogues were penned by Kader Khan. At the time of its release, Abdullah was one of the most expensive Indian films, but it failed to perform well at the domestic Indian box office. Despite its underperformance in India, Sanjay Khan claimed the film was a blockbuster in the Middle East, including Turkey. Interestingly, the film was not released in Dubai, even though all other territories had been sold.
It was reported that Khan developed a romantic relationship with Zeenat Aman during the making of the film, and the two secretly married. However, their marriage was annulled in 1979, a year before the film's release. Aman later accused Khan of physical abuse, claiming he had assaulted her and even caused damage to one of her eyes during their turbulent relationship.
The film's music was composed by R. D. Burman, with lyrics by Anand Bakshi. Among the popular tracks was Mohammad Rafi's Maine Poocha Chand Se, which became a major hit. Other notable songs included Lallah, Allah Tera Nigahban (sung by Manna Dey), Ae Khuda, Har Faisla Tera (by Kishore Kumar), Jashn-e-Bahara (by Asha Bhosle), and Om Jai Jagdish Hare (by Lata Mangeshkar), all of which enjoyed popularity.
Abdullah grossed ₹3.4 crore at the domestic Indian box office, making it the 17th highest-grossing film of 1980 in India. Despite this, its performance was considered below average. However, the film enjoyed significant success overseas, especially in the Soviet Union, where Raj Kapoor had a massive fan following. In 1983, it attracted 31.9 million Soviet viewers, making it the highest-grossing Indian film in the USSR that year and one of the top 30 most popular Indian films there.

रिलीज़ के वक्त अब्दुल्लाह सबसे महँगी भारतीय फ़िल्मों में से एक मानी गई, लेकिन यह भारत में टिकट खिड़की पर अच्छा प्रदर्शन नहीं कर पाई। हालाँकि फ़िल्म के निर्देशक संजय खान ने दावा किया कि फ़िल्म मध्य पूर्व, विशेष रूप से तुर्की में ब्लॉकबस्टर साबित हुई है। इसमें भी दिलचस्प बात यह रही कि दुबई में यह फ़िल्म रिलीज़ नहीं हुई जबकि अन्य सभी क्षेत्रों में इसके वितरण अधिकार बेचे जा चुके थे।
बताया जाता है कि इसी फ़िल्म की शूटिंग के दौरान संजय खान और ज़ीनत अमान के बीच प्रेम संबंध विकसित हुए और दोनों ने छिपकर शादी कर ली। हालाँकि उनकी शादी साल 1979 में ही, इस फ़िल्म की रिलीज़ से एक साल पहले टूट गई। बाद में नायिका ज़ीनत अमान ने संजय खान पर जिस्मानी तौर पर यातना देने के आरोप लगाए और यह भी कहा कि संजय खान की पहुँचाई चोट से उनकी एक आँख को नुकसान पहुँचा है।
अब्दुल्लाह में संगीत था राहुल देव बर्मन का और इसके गीत लिखे थे आनंद बख्शी ने। इनमें मोहम्मद रफ़ी का फ़िल्म के लिए गाया एक गीत "मैंने पूछा चाँद से" बहुत कामयाब साबित हुआ। फ़िल्म के अन्य लोकप्रिय गीतों में मन्ना डे का गाया "लल्लाह, अल्लाह तेरा निग़हबान", किशोर कुमार का "ऐ खुदा, हर फ़ैसला तेरा", आशा भोंसले का "जश्न-ए-बहारा", और लता मंगेशकर का "ओम जय जगदीश हरे" जैसे गीत शामिल थे जिन्हें सुननेवालों का प्यार मिला।
