Introduction

Aah (1953), a romantic drama directed by Raja Nawathe and produced by Raj Kapoor, was released to a "below average" box office response. The film featured Raj Kapoor and Nargis in the lead roles. This marked Nawathe's first independent directorial project, although he had previously worked as an assistant director for Raj Kapoor on films like Aag (1948), Barsaat (1949), and Awaara (1951).
The storyline of Aah draws inspiration from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's iconic novel Devdas, which has influenced numerous Indian films over the years. The film's tragic hero and the heroine's suffering follow the familiar themes from the novel.
Despite its box office performance, the film is remembered for its memorable soundtrack, which includes some of the most beloved songs in Indian cinema. Lata Mangeshkar's voice graced iconic numbers like Raja Ki Aayegi Baaraat, Yeh Shaam Ki Tanhaiyan, and Aaja Re Ab Mera Dil Pukara. A duet with Mukesh, Jaane Na Nazar, also remains a timeless classic. The song Chhoti Si Yeh Zindagani, sung by Mukesh and filmed on him, was another standout hit.
Aah was later dubbed in Tamil as Avan (with dialogues by S. D. Sundharam) and in Telugu as Prema Lekhalu. A Turkish remake titled Ah Bu Dünya, directed by Nuri Ergün, was released in 1965.
The story of Aah shares similarities with Mujhse Dosti Karoge! (2002), where a love triangle unfolds after Hrithik Roshan mistakenly believes letters from Rani Mukherjee were written by her good friend, Kareena Kapoor.
Interestingly, the film's original script had a tragic ending, with Raj Kapoor's character dying after Nargis marries Pran, and her wedding procession passes his house. However, after the premiere, Kapoor felt that the audience did not want such a sorrowful conclusion, so he changed it to a more hopeful ending.

टिकट खिड़की पर औसत से कम कामयाबी मिली। आह की कहानी शरत चंद्र चट्टोपाध्याय के यादगार उपन्यास 'देवदास' से प्रेरित लगती है। कहना होगा कि देवदास की कथा ने न जाने कितनी भारतीय फ़िल्मों को
जाने-अनजाने में प्रभावित किया है। इस फ़िल्म का 'ट्रैजिक हीरो' का किरदार और नायिका की पीड़ा दोनों उपन्यास के कथानक के तयशुदा रास्तों पर जाते दिखाई देते हैं। टिकट खिड़की पर अपने औसत प्रदर्शन के बावजूद इस फ़िल्म को इसके यादगार गीतों के लिए याद किया जाता है। हिन्दी सिनेमा के कुछ सबसे चाहे गए
गाने इस फ़िल्म का हिस्सा रहे। लता मंगेशकर के गाए "राजा की आएगी बारात", "ये शाम की तन्हाइयाँ" और "आजा रे अब मेरा दिल पुकारा" जैसे गीत खूब लोकप्रिय हुए। मुकेश के साथ गाया उनका युगल गीत, "जाने ना नज़र" काफ़ी पसन्द किया गया। मुकेश का गाया और उन्हीं पर फ़िल्माया गया गाना "छोटी सी ये ज़िंदगानी" भी यादगार रहा।
आह को बाद में तमिल भाषा में अवन नाम से एस. डी. सुंदरम के संवादों के साथ डब किया गया। तेलुगु भाषा में इसे प्रेमा लेखलू के नाम से डब कर रिलीज़ किया गया। इसका एक रीमेक तुर्की भाषा में नूरी एर्गुन के निर्देशन में आह बू दुनिया नाम से 1965 में रिलीज़ हुआ।
आह की कहानी यशराज की प्रेम त्रिकोण कथानक वाली फ़िल्म मुझसे दोस्ती करोगे! (2002) से भी मिलती है जिसमें ऋतिक रोशन द्बारा निभाया किरदार गलती से यह मान लेता है कि रानी मुखर्जी द्वारा निभाए किरदार के लिखे पत्र उसने नहीं, उसकी दोस्त करीना कपूर द्बारा निभाए किरदार ने लिखे थे। दिलचस्प बात यह है कि फ़िल्म की मूल पटकथा का अन्त दुखभरा था जिसमें नायिका नर्गिस की प्राण से शादी होने पर उसकी बरात राज कपूर के किरदार के घर के बाहर से गुज़रती है और राज का किरदार वहीं मर जाता है। पर फ़िल्म का प्रीमियर होने के बाद निर्माता राज कपूर को लगा कि दर्शक ऐसा दुखद अन्त पसन्द नहीं करेंगे, इसलिए उन्होंने अन्त बदलकर उसे ज़्यादा उम्मीद भरा बना दिया।
