8th Osian's Cinefan Festival of Asian Cinema — featured artwork

Introduction

The Film Festival Cinefan was launched in Delhi in 1999 by Aruna Vasudev and acquired by Osian's Connoisseurs of Art in 2004 as part of Neville Tuli's vision of building an integrated Film House for Osian's. The Festival thus changed its title to Osian's-Cinefan. The 8th edition of the Festival had a special focus on the Asian and Arab cinema under the category Asian Frescos and Arabesque. The edition also featured tributes to Stanley Kwan and Ritwik Ghatak. The Middle Path focused on the depiction of Buddhism in cinema and screened films such as The Light of Asia (1925) to the recent releases of the year such as Milarepa (2006). The third edition of Talent Campus was also held in collaboration with Max Mueller Bhavan, the Berlin International Film Festival and the Berlinale Talent Campus.

                          Director's Bio

                          Award-winning director Asoka Handagama was born in 1962 in Sri Lanka. He studied Mathematics at the University of Kelaniya, and got his Masters in Development Economics from Warwick University, U.K. in 1995. He entered cinema via the theatre and television. His films, This is My Moon and Flying with One Wing and have been shown at Cinefan in 2001 and 2003 respectively. This is My Moon won the Best Film award at Cinefan 2001.

                          Director's Note

                          This whole film is about a trauma. Everyone in it faces some kind of trauma, so when I was trying to find a title for this film I came to know that once Derrida, the French philosopher, was explaining in that this kind of traumatic experience cannot be interpreted by language it can only be inscribed in letters of fire, so I borrowed that idea … The end of the film oscillates between reality and imagination. You are not sure if these events are really taking place or if they are in the heads of the characters.
