Introduction
Zindagi (1964) Produced by S. S. Vasan under Gemini Pictures and directed by Ramanand Sagar, was a poignant drama centering around a stage actress, Beena, played by Vyjayanthimala. The film also stars Rajendra Kumar and Raaj Kumar in pivotal roles, with a strong supporting cast including Prithviraj Kapoor, Mehmood, Jayant, Jeevan, Leela Chitnis, and Helen.
Beena lives a modest life with her widowed mother (Leela Chitnis) and works as a theatre artist. One evening, while returning home, she is attacked by Bankhe (Jeevan) and his cronies but is saved by Rajan (Rajendra Kumar), who escorts her home. Their bond quickly blossoms into love. Rajan's wealthy father, Rai Bahadur Gangasaran (Prithviraj Kapoor), initially disapproves of Beena, but reluctantly agrees to their marriage after Rajan threatens to leave him. The couple leads a blissful life, and Beena soon becomes pregnant.
Tragedy strikes when Rajan gets a flat tire and leaves Beena alone in the car to seek help. On his return, she has vanished. She reappears the next day, but shortly afterward, news breaks that Gopal (Raaj Kumar), manager of Beena's former theatre, has been arrested for murder. Gangasaran, a jury member, seeks a fair trial. It's revealed that a woman was with Gopal on the night of the crime, but he refuses to name her and is convicted. As the verdict is about to be delivered, Beena arrives in court and confesses she was with Gopal, saving him but sacrificing her own dignity. Rajan and his father, consumed by suspicion and rage, disown her.
The film's evocative soundtrack, composed by Shankar-Jaikishan, features celebrated voices like Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, and Manna Dey. Memorable tracks include Pehle Mile they Sapnon Mein, Humne Jafa Na Seekhi, Ghungharwa Mora Chham Chham Baje, Aaj Bhagwan Ke Charanon Mein Jhukakar Sar Ko, and Lata's soulful solos like Hum Dil Ka Kanwal Denge and Ham Pyar Ka Sauda Karte Hai.
A huge commercial success, Zindagi was later remade in Tamil as Vaazhkai Padagu and in Telugu as Aada Brathuku.
बीना अपनी विधवा माँ (लीला चिटनिस) के साथ सादगी से रहती है और रंगमंच कलाकार के रूप में अपना जीवन बसर करती है। एक शाम घर लौटते हुए उस पर बांके (जीवन) और उसके गुंडे हमला करते हैं, लेकिन राजन (राजेंद्र कुमार) वहीं बीच में आकर उसे बचा लेता है और सुरक्षित घर पहुँचाता है। देखते ही देखते दोनों के बीच का रिश्ता प्रेम में बदल जाता है। राजन के धनवान पिता रायबहादुर गंगाशरण (पृथ्वीराज कपूर) पहले तो बीना को स्वीकार करने से इनकार कर देते हैं, लेकिन जब राजन उन्हें घर छोड़ने की धमकी देता है तो मजबूर होकर वे इस शादी के लिए राज़ी हो जाते हैं। शादी के बाद राजन और बीना सुखमय जीवन बिताने लगते हैं और बीना गर्भवती होती है।
त्रासदी तब घटती है जब एक रात राजन की कार का टायर पंचर हो जाता है और वह बीना को कार में अकेला छोड़कर मदद की तलाश में निकलता है। जब वह वापस लौटता है तो बीना कार में नहीं मिलती और गायब हो जाती है। इसके अगले दिन वह घर लौट आती है। लेकिन इसके कुछ ही वक्त बाद यह खबर फैलती है कि बीना के पूर्ववर्ती रंगमंच का मैनेजर गोपाल (राजकुमार) हत्या के आरोप में गिरफ़्तार हो गया है। रायबहादुर गंगाशरण इस मुकदमे की ज्यूरी के सदस्य हैं। वे निष्पक्ष सुनवाई की कोशिश करते हैं। यह तथ्य सबके सामने आ जाता है कि अपराध की रात गोपाल के साथ कोई औरत थी, मगर गोपाल उसका नाम बताने से इनकार कर देता है और दोषी ठहरा दिया जाता है। पर जैसे ही फैसला सुनाए जाने का वक्त आता है, बीना खुद अदालत में पहुँचकर स्वीकार करती है कि जो औरत उस रात गोपाल के साथ थी वह और कोई नहीं वह खुद थी। इस तरह वह गोपाल को तो सज़ा से बचा लेती है लेकिन अपनी इज़्ज़त दाँव पर लगा देती है। शक और गुस्से में डूबे राजन और उसके पिता उसे त्यागने का निर्णय करते हैं।
इस फ़िल्म के लिए भावपूर्ण संगीत शंकर-जयकिशन ने तैयार किया था और मोहम्मद रफ़ी, लता मंगेशकर, आशा भोंसले व मन्ना डे जैसे दिग्गज गायकों ने अपनी आवाज़ें इसके गीतों को दी थीं। इस फ़िल्म के यादगार गीतों में “पहले मिले थे सपनों में”, “हमने ज़फ़ा न सीखी”, “घुंघरवा मोरा छम छम बाजे”, “आज भगवान के चरणों में झुकाकर सर को” और लता मंगेशकर की गाई दो दिलकश गज़लें “हम दिल का कंवल देंगे” तथा “हम प्यार का सौदा करते हैं” प्रमुख रहे।
यह फ़िल्म व्यावसायिक रूप से जबरदस्त कामयाब रही और बाद में इसे तमिल भाषा में भी वाझ़काई पड़गु और तेलुगु में आडा ब्राथुकु शीर्षकों से रीमेक किया गया।
