Introduction
Vakil Babu (1982) Produced by Jawahar Kapoor and P.K. Luthra and directed by the veteran filmmaker Asit Sen, this socially charged courtroom drama starred the legendary Raj Kapoor in his final leading role, sharing screen space for the first and only time with his younger brother, Shashi Kapoor—as adult co-stars (excluding Aag and Awara, where Shashi appeared as a child actor).
The film boasted an ensemble cast that included Zeenat Aman, Rakesh Roshan, Rehman, Aruna Irani, and Kader Khan. Despite its strong lineup and noble themes centred around justice and morality, Vakil Babu failed to make a significant impact at the box office and is remembered as one of the notable flops of 1982, alongside films like Gopichand Jasoos.
The narrative follows Shekhar Kumar (played by Shashi Kapoor), a renowned sculptor wrongfully accused of murdering Prem Oberoi (Rakesh Roshan), a man who had shown inappropriate interest in Shekhar's wife, Kalpana (Zeenat Aman). In a surprising twist, the honorable Judge Rajvansh (Kishore Sahu) appoints an unassuming, middle-class lawyer—Satyaprakash Mathur (Raj Kapoor)—to defend Shekhar.
As Mathur digs deeper into the case, he uncovers a hidden web of jealousy and betrayal. The real killer is revealed to be Suresh Talwar (Sharad Kumar), a steward who murdered Prem upon discovering his past involvement with Suresh's fiancée, Shanti. To cover his tracks, he later silences Shanti as well. With the truth brought to light, Shekhar is ultimately acquitted of all charges.
The film's music was composed by the celebrated duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal, with lyrics by Anand Bakshi. Despite the involvement of iconic vocalists Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, the soundtrack failed to resonate with audiences. Numbers such as Hum Kahan Kho Gaye and Dil Mein Sholay by Lata, and Aa Gayi Jawani and Ae Musafiron by Asha, were largely forgettable and did not stand the test of time.

इस फ़िल्म में इन दोनों के अलावा ज़ीनत अमान, राकेश रोशन, रहमान, अरुणा ईरानी और कादर ख़ान जैसे कलाकार काम कर रहे थे। न्याय और नैतिकता जैसे गंभीर विषयों को उठाने के बावजूद और पर्दे पर दिग्गज कलाकारों की मौजूदगी के बाद भी वकील बाबू टिकट खिड़की पर कोई बड़ा प्रभाव नहीं डाल सकी। एक दूसरी फ़िल्म गोपीचंद जासूस (1982) के साथ इसे भी सन् 1982 की चंद ऐसी बड़ी फ़िल्मों में गिना जाता है जो कामयाब नहीं रहीं।
फ़िल्म की कहानी शेखर कुमार (शशि कपूर) के किरदार के साथ आगे बढ़ती है। शेखर एक प्रसिद्ध मूर्तिकार है। उसके ऊपर प्रेेम ओबेरॉय (राकेश रोशन) की हत्या का झूठा इल्ज़ाम आ जाता है। मरनेवाला किरदार प्रेेम शेखर की पत्नी कल्पना (ज़ीनत अमान) के पीछे आकर्षित था। फिर कहानी को एक अप्रत्याशित मोड़ देते हुए माननीय जज राजवंश (किशोर साहू) शेखर के बचाव में एक साधारण से मध्यवर्गीय वकील सत्यप्रकाश माथुर (राज कपूर) को नियुक्त कर देते हैं।
जैसे-जैसे वकील माथुर इस मामले की तह में जाते हैं, उन्हें एक ऐसा षड्यंत्र सामने खुलता हुआ दिखता है जिसमें ईर्ष्या और विश्वासघात जैसी कई जालसाज़ियाँ छिपी हैं। आखिर में असली हत्यारा एक जहाज़ी खिदमतगार सुरेश तलवार (शरद कुमार) निकलता है जिसने प्रेेम को इसलिए मार डाला था क्योंकि उसे अपनी मंगेतर शांति से प्रेम का एक पुराना रिश्ता बर्दाश्त नहीं हुआ। इसके बाद अपने गुनाह पर पर्दा डालने के लिए उसने बाद में शांति को भी मार डाला। इस सच्चाई के सबके सामने आने पर शेखर को सभी आरोपों से बरी कर दिया जाता है।
इस फ़िल्म के लिए संगीत मशहूर जोड़ी लक्ष्मीकांत-प्यारेलाल ने तैयार किया था और इसके लिए गीत आनंद बक्षी ने लिखे थे। लता मंगेशकर और आशा भोंसले जैसी दिग्गज गायिकाओं की मौजूदगी के बावजूद इस फ़िल्म के गाने दर्शकों को प्रभावित नहीं कर पाए। "हम कहाँ खो गए" और "दिल में शोले" जिन्हें लता मंगेशकर ने गाया था तथा "आ गई जवानी" और "ऐ मुसाफ़िरों" जिन्हें आशा भोंसले ने अपनी आवाज़ दी थी, यह सारे गीत या तो भुला दिए गए या ये समय की कसौटी पर खरे नहीं उतर सके।
