Introduction

Sunehre Din (1949) is a Hindi romance film based on a story written and directed by Satish Nigam and produced by Madan Lal Mehrotra. The film featured a notable ensemble cast led by Raj Kapoor, along with Roop Kamal, Nigar Sultana, and Rehana in key roles. Supporting performances were delivered by Ramesh Sinha, Indumati, Heera, Kamalakant, and Mahendra, contributing to the narrative fabric of this post-independence cinematic piece.

The film's music played a central role in its appeal, with lyrics penned by D. N. Madhok and compositions by Gyan Dutt. The soundtrack showcased a variety of celebrated playback singers of the era. Among the memorable tracks were: Umango Ke Din Beete Jaye performed by Geeta Ghosh Roy Chowdhuri (popularly known as Geeta Dutt), Shamshad Begum, and Sulochana Kadam; Baharon Ne Jise Chheda Hai by Mukesh Chand Mathur (Mukesh); Lo Ji Sun Lo Tumse Kehte Hai sung by Mukesh and Surinder Kaur; Dil Lagakar Unse by Kalyani Das and Shamshad Begum; Dil Do Nainon Mein rendered by Mukesh and Surinder Kaur; Jiya Ka Diya featuring the voices of G. M. Durrani, Geeta Dutt, Khan Mastana, and Shamshad Begum; Hum Mast Dilon Ko Lekar by G. M. Durrani, Kalyani Das, Khan Mastana, and Shamshad Begum; Maine Dekhi Jag Ki Reet performed by Mukesh and Shamshad Begum; Thandi Thandi Hawa Jo Aaye sung by Shamshad Begum; and Tum Sang Ankhiya Mila Ke by Surinder Kaur.

Despite featuring the rising star Raj Kapoor, Sunehre Din did not significantly advance his career at the time. The film failed to make a strong mark commercially or critically. It was described by contemporary critics as “tedious viewing” and was dismissed as "another creaky old film with a stupid, insufferable story and an equally unimaginative screenplay."

However, Raj Kapoor's fortunes soon turned with the release of subsequent films like Parivartan, Andaz, and particularly Barsaat, which he also directed and produced. Barsaat not only elevated his standing in the industry but also became the highest-grossing Indian film of its time, cementing Kapoor's legacy as a leading figure in Indian cinema.
