While paintings are statements, finalised through a complex interaction between invention and criticism, drawings are like thoughts, carrying the truth of the moment within themโ€ฆIf paintings are conceived as balance, drawings may be used to push images to extremes, and to test image against experience.

Patwardhan, Sudhir (Artist). The Tree. Oil on canvas, 1995 | Painting | FineArts | 00376634
Sudhir Patwardhanโ€™s creative thinking reflects the process an artist must struggle through and experience so as to create the coherent space within themselves whereby, say, the Passionatedetachment or Intuitive-logic of a situation or idea, is instinctively grasped, thereby pushing forward the mind and heart to come closer to grasping the holistic nature of oneself, oneโ€™s creativity, and oneโ€™s relationship with all around.

"This recent work (โ€˜The Treeโ€™) seeks to bring into painting the experience of the swelling forms of relief sculpture. The undulations of surface volume and the waxing and waning of sizes create a movement into and across the canvas. These works are in a sense attempts to bring the experience of conventions which have originated in other forms into the rectangular format painting that I practice. It is important for me that my painting be experienced as a single image. This is a legacy of easel painting and comes from a need to โ€˜stand and stare.โ€™ This is tempered by movement across the surface which embodies the passage of time. The stilled moment of seeing, and the passage of time, both have to find a place in my work. When painters and theoreticians of the Renaissance developed the theory of perspective as a means of representing space correctly, they thought of it as an advance over the earlier modes prevalent in Gothic painting. When Cubists introduced a way of simultaneously representing different perceptions of objects in one image, they thought they were evolving a way more appropriate to a modern consciousness of the world. When Rauschenberg made a move from nature to culture with his flatbed picture plane, it was thought that representation of the visual world was forever problematised. None of these developments in fact invalidate an earlier mode, or prove it inadequate. They only indicate a changed view-point. They make a new proposition. The validity of the new or the adequacy of the old is still a matter of a significant relation to the lived experience of the artist and his audience.โ€

Patwardhan, Sudhir (Artist). Gothic Woman. Acrylic on Canvas, 1998 | Painting | FineArts | 0022665
In this period [1997-2004], Patwardhan records his encounters with the human figure as an epiphanic presence, allowing archetypal narratives to filter through the everyday gestures of labour and struggle. His landscapes are phrased as invocations to the earthโ€™s vitality.

Patwardhan, Sudhir (Artist). Cyclist. Acrylic on canvas, 2005 | Painting | FineArts | 00336107
The tension of this conflict between involvement and distance underlies all my work. The impulse to greater involvement pushes towards an โ€˜expressionistโ€™ mode, while the impulse to distance myself from the subject leads to a more complex and โ€˜classicalโ€™ mode. Individual works are of course always a balance between these opposing pulls and reflect the dominance of one or the other need.

  1. SWARAJ - Revisualising India's Political History
"What does ๐—ฆ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ท truly mean? Is freedom achieved at a single historic moment or period, or must self-rule be continually imagined, questioned and renewed? India's journey towards Swaraj was shaped not by one voice or one path, but through reform and resistance, revolution and non-violence, political thought, public protest, art, print, photography, cinema and the collective will of its people. The Tuli Research Centre for India Studies (T.R.I.S.) presents ๐—ฆ๐—ช๐—”๐—ฅ๐—”๐—: ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—œ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฎ'๐˜€ ๐—ฃ๐—ผ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—›๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜†, a pioneering exhibition curated by Neville Tuli. Bringing together rare artworks, prints, photographs, books, film publicity art, political propaganda and visual-textual-audio archives, SWARAJ traces India's complex journey towards political self-rule and self-discovery. From early European coastal encounters, the Bengal Renaissance and the First War of Independence in 1857 to the rise of Bharat Mata, the Tiranga, Gandhiji's inspired satyagraha, civil disobedience and mass mobilisation, the exhibition explores how the idea of India was envisioned, contested and transformed. It journeys through revolutionary movements and non-violence, subaltern uprisings, the Partition, the Constitution, the integration of the Princely States, the Emergency, wars, civic dissent and people's protests. It also foregrounds the vital role of artists, photographers, publishers, newspapers, journals, cartoons and cinema in recording and shaping the nation's political consciousness. SWARAJ invites us to encounter history not as something distant or settled, but as a daily living inheritance that continues to influence who we are and how we understand freedom, identity, and ourselves today. Watch the video for a glimpse into this expansive visual journey, and follow the exhibition as it revisualises India's political history through art, image, text and sound.
  2. How did Sudhir Patwardhan bring marginalised lives within the modern city into public view?
How did Sudhir Patwardhan bring marginalised lives within the modern city into public view? In โ€œOverbridgeโ€ (1981) four people coincide upon a pedestrian bridge. This wonderfully large pencil drawing preceded Patwardhan's oil painting of the same title. Two men walk with their arms across each other's shoulders, suggesting that very Indian form of camaraderie within every city. A solitary man faces us Kafkaesque like, while a veiled woman at the edge appears marked by illness, possibly leprosy, and exclusion. Patwardhan observes them as they truly are, as stoic rather than heroic subjects. Created amid social and economic change, Overbridge reflects urban alienation and marginalisation. Subaltern Studies was also taking shape, bringing lives excluded from dominant histories into focus. Patwardhan similarly gives overlooked urban subjects visibility and dignity. Trained as a doctor, Patwardhan works as a radiologist in Thane alongside his self-taught artistic practice. Encounters with commuters, labourers and patients shape his urban realism, a genuinely empathic expression of our people and their daily grind endured with grace and resilience, but not romanticised. Within SWARAJ: Revisualising India's Political History Exhibition, the drawing asks how freedom is experienced at society's margins, placing dignity, recognition and companionship at the heart of Swaraj. Artwork: Overbridge (1981), Pencil Drawing on paper Artist: Sudhir Patwardhan
