Introduction

Return of Jewel Thief (1996) was the long-awaited sequel to the iconic 1967 crime thriller Jewel Thief, directed by Ashok Tyagi. This film arrived almost three decades after its predecessor, with veteran actors Ashok Kumar and Dev Anand reprising their roles. However, despite this connection to the original, fans were left disappointed, as there is no scene where the two legendary actors share the screen together.

The film had a star-studded cast, with Dharmendra, Jackie Shroff, Shilpa Shirodkar, Anu Aggarwal, and Madhoo joining the ensemble. Yet, unlike its predecessor, Return of Jewel Thief failed to make an impact at the box office, a sharp contrast to the overwhelming success of Aashiqui (1990), which marked Anu Aggarwal's last major film release.

The plot revolves around the theft of the priceless Kohinoor diamond from an exhibition hosted by billionaire Vinay Kumar (Dev Anand), who faces the possibility of losing his jewellery store to the British government unless the diamond is recovered. Despite the gripping premise, which kept viewers guessing about the identity of the real jewel thief, the execution fell short in certain areas.

The music, composed by Jatin Lalit, was a significant let down despite contributions from renowned playback singers like Asha Bhosle, Abhijeet, Kumar Sanu, and Alka Yagnik. The compositions were largely forgettable, failing to capture the magic of the original's soundtrack.
