Introduction

Parzania (Heaven and Hell on Earth, 2005) is an English-language Indian drama film co-written by Rahul Dholakia and David N. Donihue and directed by Rahul Dholakia, it is inspired by the true story of Dara and Rupa Mody, whose ten-year-old son, Azhar Mody, disappeared during the Gulbarg Society massacre on 28 February 2002, one of the most horrific episodes of the Gujarat communal riots. In the film, Azhar is fictionalised as Parzaan Pithawala, whose disappearance becomes the emotional and narrative centre of the story. Produced on a modest budget of approximately US$700,000 and filmed in Ahmedabad and Hyderabad, the film features powerful performances by Naseeruddin Shah and Sarika in the lead roles, with Corin Nemec and Raj Zutshi in supporting roles.

The narrative follows the Pithawala family—Cyrus (Naseeruddin Shah), his wife Shernaz (Sarika), their son Parzaan (Parzan Dastur), and daughter Dilshad (Pearl Barsiwala)—a Parsi family practising Zoroastrianism whose lives are irreversibly transformed by communal violence. During the riots, Parzaan disappears amid the brutal attacks on their neighbourhood, while the remaining family members narrowly escape. The film subsequently chronicles Cyrus and Shernaz's relentless search for their missing son, portraying not only their grief and psychological trauma but also their struggle for justice in the aftermath of collective violence.

An important parallel narrative involves Allan (Corin Nemec), an American researcher who arrives in Ahmedabad to study Mahatma Gandhi and seek personal meaning. Through his association with the Pithawala family and his engagement with Gandhian ideals of peace and non-violence, Allan confronts the realities of communal conflict and questions the social and political circumstances that enabled such violence. His perspective provides an external lens through which the film examines issues of identity, secularism, and human rights.

Beyond its personal narrative, Parzania critically interrogates institutional responses to the Gujarat riots. It depicts the formation of a Human Rights Commission, where survivors and witnesses testify to alleged administrative failures and police inaction during the violence. By foregrounding these testimonies, the film challenges official narratives that minimised allegations of conspiracy and state complicity. The film concludes with a dedication to the victims of communal violence, emphasising remembrance and justice.

Although Parzania received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification, its release in Gujarat faced significant obstacles due to the reluctance of distributors and theatre owners, who feared political backlash and social unrest despite Supreme Court directives ensuring security. Critically acclaimed for its sensitive portrayal of communal trauma, the film won two National Film Awards: Best Direction for Rahul Dholakia and Best Actress for Sarika. It premiered at the 36th International Film Festival of India in Goa in November 2005 and was released nationwide on 26 January 2007, establishing itself as a significant cinematic intervention in the discourse on communal violence and collective memory.

Body of Work

Based on a real incident, Parzania is a breathtaking story of an event that changed India.

Allan Webbings, an intelligent but troubled American, arrives in Ahmedabad, looking for answers, seeking an understanding of the horrors that religious differences can create. He has chosen India as his playground, and Gandhi as his subject. He meets Cyrus, the local projectionist who brings him into his family. Cyrus is a Parsi. He lives with his wife, Shernaz, and their two children – Parzan and Dilshad. Parzan is an imaginative 10 year-old who has developed a perfect world – Parzania - in his mind which he shares only with his sister.

Through Cyrus's family, Allan finds his peace, just before the rest of the country loses its sanity. One morning, the beauty and peace of Cyrus's family is rocked as a bomb explodes in a train killing Hindus. Within 24 hours, thousands of Muslims are slaughtered in a devastating communal carnage. And in the midst of the terror and violence, Parzan goes missing. While Cyrus fights for his sanity as he searches for his child, Allan battles to uncover the truth behind the riots.
