Parzania2005
Introduction
The narrative follows the Pithawala family—Cyrus (Naseeruddin Shah), his wife Shernaz (Sarika), their son Parzaan (Parzan Dastur), and daughter Dilshad (Pearl Barsiwala)—a Parsi family practising Zoroastrianism whose lives are irreversibly transformed by communal violence. During the riots, Parzaan disappears amid the brutal attacks on their neighbourhood, while the remaining family members narrowly escape. The film subsequently chronicles Cyrus and Shernaz's relentless search for their missing son, portraying not only their grief and psychological trauma but also their struggle for justice in the aftermath of collective violence.
An important parallel narrative involves Allan (Corin Nemec), an American researcher who arrives in Ahmedabad to study Mahatma Gandhi and seek personal meaning. Through his association with the Pithawala family and his engagement with Gandhian ideals of peace and non-violence, Allan confronts the realities of communal conflict and questions the social and political circumstances that enabled such violence. His perspective provides an external lens through which the film examines issues of identity, secularism, and human rights.
Beyond its personal narrative, Parzania critically interrogates institutional responses to the Gujarat riots. It depicts the formation of a Human Rights Commission, where survivors and witnesses testify to alleged administrative failures and police inaction during the violence. By foregrounding these testimonies, the film challenges official narratives that minimised allegations of conspiracy and state complicity. The film concludes with a dedication to the victims of communal violence, emphasising remembrance and justice.
Although Parzania received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification, its release in Gujarat faced significant obstacles due to the reluctance of distributors and theatre owners, who feared political backlash and social unrest despite Supreme Court directives ensuring security. Critically acclaimed for its sensitive portrayal of communal trauma, the film won two National Film Awards: Best Direction for Rahul Dholakia and Best Actress for Sarika. It premiered at the 36th International Film Festival of India in Goa in November 2005 and was released nationwide on 26 January 2007, establishing itself as a significant cinematic intervention in the discourse on communal violence and collective memory.
