Parshuram (1947): featured artwork

Introduction

Parshuram (1947) Directed by Ramnik Desai and produced by Navin Pictures, this was a mythological musical starring Prithviraj Kapoor, Leela Pendharker, Nandrekar, Urmila, Jay Dev, and Pramila. With music composed by Master Ratanlal, it featured songs such as Jo Mandir Me Hai Wo Hi Hai Maikhane Me and Bach Raho Hum Nahi Jaane, sung by Shama Bai and Pt. Betab, along with Kya Kahu Raat Ki Baat Sakhi.

The film narrates the story of Parshuram, believed to be the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu. It explores key episodes of his life—his divine birth, the beheading of his mother at his father's command, and his mission to restore dharma. Parshuram is depicted as a Brahmin by birth who adopts Kshatriya qualities, earning him the unique title of "Brahma-Kshatriya."

A pivotal conflict centres around his battle with the corrupt King Kartavirya Sahasrarjuna, who attempts to seize Kamadhenu, the sacred cow. In retaliation, Parshuram slays the king, his army, and eventually eradicates the Haihaya dynasty. He later performs the Ashvamedha yagna, donates his wealth to sages, and retires for penance.

The film also references Parshuram's legendary role as the teacher of Bhishma, Dronacharya, and Karna, and his curse upon Karna. He is said to have gifted the Sudarshan Chakra to Lord Krishna and is believed to be an immortal sage destined to guide Kalki, the final avatar of Vishnu.

While historically significant, Parshuram appears to have underperformed at the box office. Although rich in mythic material, Parshuram lacks documentation of commercial success and may not have resonated with audiences, possibly contributing to its obscurity in box office history.
