Introduction

Pagal (1940) Directed by A. R. Kardar and produced under the Ranjit Movietone banner, this psycho-social melodrama was not only helmed by Kardar but also co-written by him in collaboration with Kamal Amrohi. The film emerged as a significant box office success, becoming the fourth highest-grossing Indian film of 1940. Headed by Prithviraj Kapoor, the supporting cast included Trilok Kapoor, Madhuri, Sitara Devi, Noor Mohammed Charlie, Khatoon, and Sunalini Devi, all of whom brought depth to the film's complex emotional landscape.
The narrative centres around a doctor, portrayed by Prithviraj Kapoor, who suffers from psychological issues while working in a mental institution. He falls in love with a woman but, due to an unfortunate twist of fate, ends up marrying her sister. The emotional turmoil that follows, including his conflicted treatment of both women and his eventual descent into insanity, forms the crux of the film's tragic storyline. Kapoor's intense performance was widely praised by both critics and audiences, further solidifying his reputation as a serious dramatic actor and contributing to the film's popularity and commercial success.
The music was composed by Khemchand Prakash, with lyrics by D. N. Madhok. Although specific reviews of the film's music from that era are limited, Prakash's contribution is notable given his stature in the 1940s Hindi film industry. He was later recognized for introducing legendary singers such as Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. Composer Kamal Dasgupta, among others, would go on to describe Khemchand Prakash as one of the finest music directors of his generation, highlighting the enduring legacy of his work, even in films like Pagal.

पागल (1940) के निर्देशक अब्दुल रशीद कारदार थे और इसका निर्माण 'रंजीत मूवीटोन' स्टूडियो के बैनर तले हुआ था। इस फ़िल्म की कहानी एक मनोवैज्ञानिक सामाजिक मेलोड्रामा से भरे कथानक पर आधारित थी और इसे फ़िल्म के निर्देशक कारदार ने कमाल अमरोही के साथ मिलकर लिखा था। यह फ़िल्म सन् 1940 की चौथी सबसे अधिक कमाई करने वाली भारतीय फ़िल्म बनी और टिकट खिड़की पर इसने बड़ी कामयाबी हासिल की। फ़िल्म में शीर्षक भूमिका में पृथ्वीराज कपूर थे और उनके साथ त्रिलोक कपूर, माधुरी, सितारा देवी, नूर मोहम्मद चार्ली, ख़ातून और सुनालिनी देवी जैसे कलाकार इसमें अन्य सहायक भूमिकाएँ निभा रहे थे। इन अभिनेताओं ने अपने उम्दा काम से फ़िल्म के जटिल भावनात्मक संसार को विश्वसनीयता प्रदान की।
इस फ़िल्म कहानी एक डॉक्टर के किरदार के साथ आगे बढ़ती है। डॉक्टर की यह शीर्षक भूमिका पृथ्वीराज कपूर ने निभाई है। यह डॉक्टर एक मानसिक चिकित्सालय में कार्यरत है और खुद मानसिक चुनौतियों से जूझ रहा है। उसे एक स्त्री से प्रेम हो जाता है लेकिन दुर्भाग्यवश हालात कुछ ऐसे बनते हैं कि उसे उस स्त्री की बहन से विवाह करना पड़ता है। इसके बाद कहानी में भारी भावनात्मक उथल-पुथल होती है। दोनों महिलाओं के प्रति डॉक्टर का व्यवहार उसकी त्रासद मानसिक स्थिति की गवाही देता है। अंततः वह खुद पागलपन की ओर बढ़ने लगता है। फ़िल्म की कहानी एक विचित्र त्रासदी की ओर बढ़ती चली जाती है। इस फ़िल्म में पृथ्वीराज कपूर के जज़्बातों से भरे और संवेदनशील अभिनय को आलोचकों और दर्शकों दोनों ने खूब सराहा। फ़िल्म उद्योग में उनकी एक गंभीर अभिनेता के रूप में प्रतिष्ठा स्थापित हुई और फ़िल्म को अच्छी व्यावसायिक सफलता भी हासिल हुई।
इस फ़िल्म के लिए संगीत तैयार किया था खेमचंद प्रकाश ने और गीतों के बोल लिखे थे डी. एन. मधोक ने। उस दौर में लिखी गई संगीत समीक्षाओं के विस्तृत विवरण तो उपलब्ध नहीं होते लेकिन 1940 के दशक में प्रमुख संगीतकारों में गिने जाने वाले खेमचंद प्रकाश के सिनेमाई योगदान को बहुत मान दिया जाता है। बाद में इन्हीं खेमचंद प्रकाश ने लता मंगेशकर और किशोर कुमार जैसे दिग्गज गायकों को फ़िल्म जगत में मौका दिया। संगीतकार कमल दासगुप्ता सहित कई अन्य लोगों ने खेमचंद प्रकाश को उनकी पीढ़ी का श्रेष्ठ संगीत निर्देशक माना है और पागल जैसी फ़िल्मों में दिये उनके संगीत के चलते ही आज भी उनके रचनात्मक कर्म की स्थायी छवि लोगों के दिलों में बनी हुई है।
