Teen Kanya (Three Daughters), 1961, India, Bengali
Scene Description Amulya turns at the sound of the recorder and sees Mrinmoyee standing beside it. She has finally accepted him. Ray doesn't make the logic of Mrinmoyee's acceptance known to the audience in sure terms, except that she has come to him by her own choice and not anyone else's. Perhaps it is the grief of a long separation, the change of seasons over which Mrinmoyee has developed a tugging towards nuptial bliss, or the sheer weight of reality that has made Amulya the next possible escape that prompts it. Keeping it open to interpretation, yet delightfully romantic, Ray ends the film with the bedroom door shutting close on the mother. (7/7)
