Film TitleKanchanjungha (Kanchonjônggha), 1962, India, Bengali
Scene DescriptionYoung Ashok Ray and his uncle Shiv Shankar (who had been a tutor to Indranath Roy's son Anil) are on a trip to Darjeeling too. Shiv Shankar is more eager to find his nephew a job than the young man is himself. Ashok and Indranath are two people who couldn't be further apart, in terms of a generational distinction and an unequivocal class barrier that separates the two. Ashok has a degree in history and is prepared to realise advancement in life by his own efforts, even if the reward is small. He is not interested in currying personal favours. Ashok is a product of new, independent India while Indranath is a haughty anglophile. In their interactions, there is a clear suggestion of the colonialist-nationalist dissention. (2/4)
