Film Title

Ka Purush Maha Purush (Kapurush O Mahapurush), 1965, India, Bengali

Scene Description The evening drops. Just before the train arrives at the station, Karuna appears too, almost like she has walked into Amitabha's dream. But the potentially dramatic frame is momentary; she has not come for a romantic elopement but for her bottle of sleeping pills that he hadn't returned on the previous night. There is an ambiguity here. Is this her answer to him? That she has accepted her condemnation to this marriage. Or does she simply come because, as she says, the pills cannot be bought locally so she needs that bottle. Or is she perhaps saving Amitabha from himself? She disappears with the light of the approaching train, affirming that they are only going further apart. The ending is predicated on the unknown. (11/17)
